Is the 4 hp noticible? What are the advantages to spending for a 2000. Are there any other differences?

The interior fit & finish is definitely superior to the '99, plus things like PSM option and general updates due to model maturity. The interior plastic trim in the '99 had a nasty cheap finish which got changed to a slightly less nasty cheap finish in the '00.

I personally am glad that I bought the later car. I don't think you'll notice 4hp.

PSM std on all C4 models. It's optional on all C2s, even on the 2002 model.

PSM was standard on all AWD 996 models from 1999-on. It was offered as an option on 2WD 996 models from 2000-on.

It was an option on my car, although I consider it a mandatory one.

The other benefit of the '00 cars over '99 and earlier is the e-gas or throttle by wire. (Makes the PSM possible I guess).

You're right about throttle by wire being a requirement for PSM. Although e-gas is presumably a technological advancement which also allows better fuel management for emissions and more accurate cruise control, it also has drawbacks with respect to the mechanical linkage on the '99 model. Many drivers have commented that e-gas makes it more difficult to match rpm's when blipping the throttle on a downshift and some have also complained that it is less linear in its operation which can make smooth starts with the clutch more difficult.

Alhough the '99 model didn't have PSM it did have available electronic traction control and an item that you can't get on the Y2K and later models....a real mechanical limited slip differential, which is nice if you autocross or track the car.

As to the "cheap" plastic interior of the '99, if you find one with the full leather interior and maybe some carbon trim pieces, this is pretty much a moot point.

I've had absolutely no mechanical problems with my April '99 build car. Porsche made some mid model year changes in Feb '99 that addressed issues with the earlier build cars, but even those problems (oil leaks, cooling system etc) only affected a small percentage of cars.

Just thought I would put in my $.02 in defense of the '99 model year.

Mike

Just to get this right, you cannot get psm as an option on the 99 model?

Ron,

PSM was standard on the '99 C4, which was released in the middle of the 1999 model run(around January '99). It was NOT available on the 1999 C2 at all.

The '99 C2 had electronic rear wheel traction control combined with a mechanical limited slip differential as an option. The first C2 with PSM as an option was the 2000 model.

Hope that clarifies things.

Mike

Agreed and love my ‘99, feels light, analog and quick. LSD, no PSM, 6MT all good things to me for the intended purpose of this car.
