'99 or '00 60K service/cost
 

Need advice on required service for either a '99 or '00 996. I've had various
responses as to what should be done and estimated cost. Any input and/or recommendations greatly appreciated.

60K is air/pollen/oil filters. oil change. spark plug change. poly belt change. and a whoel bunch of "inspects".

Parts if you bought would be about $250-$300 (places like Sunset in Oregon that sells at cost +15)and your time. If the dealer does it, the parts then become about $500+ or more plus their hourly rate. My guess is well over $1k and approaching $2k depending on dealer. Some have paid as much as $1300 and as little as $550 or so for the 30K which is what I based my numbers on.

Anybody have the dealer do their 60K and care to comment on cost?

I had mine done at an independent shop for just under $800 including parts and labor.

Here's the maintenance list for a 996. Never did a 60K mile so can't help there, but I did pay $585 at my dealer for a 30K service, and you can see on the list what else has to be done.

Add plugs and belt to what Jim just posted. What Gary paid is very good and more fair but that isn't what a dealer will charge. Key is to be able to do it yourself or find a good independent shop that specializes in P-Cars and you can get it under $1K. Dealers are probably in the $1K-$2K range. Lots of spread on the range b/c dealers set their own prices.

As far as Porsche is concerned, they charge what the market will bear. It's certainly not cost plus like GM. So there will be wild fluctuations in price depending upon the market. One technique that I've used to get the price down from wildly extravagant to just high is to call different Porsche Dealerships and ask for a price quote for a paricular service, and of course tell them that I'll be getting quotes from other Dealers. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where there are two Porsche Dealers within a half hour of where I live and another about forty-five minutes away.

I get the feeling that if I were ever to take a modicum of interest in learning how to do it, the 30k service wouldn't be that difficult to DIY. It's so strange: I do most of my own work on the carbuerated motorcycle that I own, but for some reason feel downright out of sorts when it comes to working on cpus and fuel injectors on my car and my other bike. I guess I'm paying for that ignorance and fear in the end, eh?

Isnt the fuel filter also changed at 60K?

As Dell said, the 60K is the 30K with plugs, polyrib belt, and if you want Fuel filter added. All of the parts and oil can be had for about $200. The only thing that I add to this service is some fuel injection cleaner and water remover in the gas tank.

I would think that about $1000 is typical for what most dealers charge for this service, but there is nothing exotic or difficult in doing the 60K.

I would think that a leisurely afternoon and a set of ramps would all that would be needed to do this service.

I'm gonna do the 45K this weekend, and expect to spend about a hour on it.

I am doing mine in the next couple weeks and have already starting pricing the parts:

Oil Filter $11
Oil $45 (9qts @ $5)
Air Filter $20
Pollen $50
Poly Belt $20
Plugs $45 (6 @$7.50)

Comes in at just under $200 and a couple hours of my time. What will I do with all that $$$ I saved? :evilgrin:

It would be very cool to watch someone with some experience do this one afternoon in order to get past the jitters at attempting it solo. They should have a Porsche service class.

Meanwhile, don't you also need to computer interface to determine if the car is flashing any electronic warnings?
