2002 VIN Codes different from other 996's or 993's?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Here's the way I understand the 02 MY VIN numbers to be defined. It appears to be different than Robin's breakdown for 993's and earlier. My questions are:
1. Am I correct
2. If so is this breakdown just for MY 02 or all 996 series?

Here's my VIN for 02 C4 Cab TipS
WP0CA29982S650712

WP0.....everyone knows
C.......Body Code A=Coupe/B=Targa/C=Cab
A.......Code for engine types
2.......Restraint System
99......Vehicle type (along w/12th digit
8.......ROW filler, USA number code
2.......Model Year (2002)
S.......Place of Mfr (Stuttgart)
6.......Last number of vehicle type
50712...Sequential number(starting at 50,001 ??)

Is this really different than 993 VIN breakdown?
Is this for all 996's
Is this new for MY 2002

TIA   <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

I guess I should have added.."Is this breakdown even correct?" <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Slight correction:

WP0.....everyone knows
C.......Body Code A=Coupe/B=Targa/C=Cab
A.......Code for engine types
2.......Restraint System
99......Vehicle type (along w/12th digit)
8.......ROW filler, USA number code aka test digit
2.......Model Year (2002)
S.......Place of Mfr (Stuttgart)
6.......Last number of vehicle type
5.......USA Body code
0712....Serial number, consecutive

Thanks for straightening me out on that....but the 996 (or the 2002 series) VIN breakdown is different than what Robin shows for the 993's and earlier 911's. Is that correct, or is it just symantics.

Not trying to be picky...just trying to understand. I wonder if there will be more than 2 engine codes for 03 now that there is an option on NA engines as well as Turbos.

I know the world doesn't turn on this information, but someone has to ask the dumb questions. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Here's an example of a 993 VIN:

WP0.....everyone knows
A.......Body Code A=Coupe/B=Targa/C=Cab
A.......Code for engine types
2.......Restraint System
99......Vehicle type (along w/12th digit)
7.......ROW filler, USA number code aka test digit
T.......Model Year (1996)
S.......Place of Mfr (Stuttgart)
3.......Last number of vehicle type (993)
2.......USA Body code (Coupe)
1456....Serial number, consecutive

The only difference is the year designation which changed from letters to numbers.

Viken

My VIN is WP0ZZZ99ZZS608524.

OK its UK so its going to be different to NA but all those Z's are sending me to sleep! Any ideas what it all means?

DonW-Cape Cod Aug 6, 2002 04:42 PM

Sure Paul, it's easy now that I understand the code. You have an unpainted 996 with no restraint system w/o an engine made in an unknown year with an undetermined body style. However, we do know that it is the 608,524th car built that year.

Hope that helps! (sorry for the humor from the Colonies)

LOL! Or, a few people along the assembly line fell asleep while Paul's car was passing. :D

Very funny Don!

But now I am getting seriously worried! What the hell does it mean? <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" />

Hey Paul, What kind of motor are you gonna put in your car??? Or are you gonna leave it out to save weight like on that other thread?? Is the unpainted body really Artic Silver. Does that save any weight?

paul s uk Aug 7, 2002 08:53 AM

Its all very funny but it's beginning to freak me out. It drive's like a Porsche, it sounds like a Porsche, it looks like a Lapis Blue Porsche, but what the hell is it?

Someone help me please. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Dear Paul,
In Europe ZZ means absolutely nothing. The 4th and 5th digits are marketing designations only. They are used in the USA to show body style and engine installed. This is a US thing not a European thing. Horses for courses. The third Z does actually mean something. This means it is not to be sold in the USA.
I hope this clears things up for you. ZZ who cares. Z not to be sold in the USA.
Ciao,
Adrian

Do not worry - I have a new, unregistered C4 with the VIN WPOZZZ99Z2S644651
The engine is in it and it is painted!
