Hesitation between 3000 and 4000 rpm's

Hello,

My '99 C2 cab has been hesitating while accelerating through 3000 rpm's and stops once I get to 4000 rpm's. My local dealer says it is the clutch and it going to cost $2500. Does this sound correct? To throw salt into my cuts he said that one of my horns was broken and that would cost $250.

Has anyone had a similar hesitation problem?

Thank you,

JAG

The clucth has absolutely nothing to do with engine hesitation. Find another dealer.

Try this get in too 4th gear, have the cars RPM's around 1800 and stab the gas....tell us what happens when you do this.....and how many miles are on the car?, do you track it?, only owner?, these anwsers could help out.

This may be a variocam issue. The variocam activates at around 3200 RPM.

As an aside, I think you need a second opinion about the clutch.

I'm having a very similar experience with my 40th Ann. It has 23,000 KM and I have a slight miss or hesitation btw 3 and 4k RPM. I associated that hesitation to the Fabspeed I installed earlier this summer since I've notice that problem soon afterward. Maybe a coincidence I hadn't notice earlier as well.
Is this a normal happening when the variocam kick-in ???

If the power cuts off at 4K RPM, that's a MAF issue for sure. That's exactly the behavior that happens. The clutch has absolutely nothing to do with that!

My guess would be the hall sensors that control the variocam.

It is probably nothing major. Remove the MAF and clean it by spraying it with either electronics cleaner or carb cleaner. Then disconnect the battery for a few minutes. You car will have an unsteady idle for a few drive cycles, but then should smoth out.

Does the hesitation seem to go away under heavy acceleration? If so, the guys that said variocam are probably correct. This is normal. Same thing happened on my 996 C4S under mild to medium acceleration. Definitely get another opinion.

My M3 is having the same issue, sort of a sputtering or hiccup between 3-4k rpm. Been to the dealer 3 times...first time dealer says there is no problem, second time they replace the MAF, third time they reflash the DME. Problem is still there! Need to go back again. Totally sucks.

The M3 will be for sale in the spring. I rarely drive it, only 16k miles after 4 years. It's in mint condition.

Not sure what will replace, but probably not another 2 seater (although I do like the Boxster S, having driven a friends before).

What pisses me off is that the car has been great up until this and now I have to bring it in for the 4th time to fix the same thing.

16k in 4 years?
my audi is 10 months old and has 17500 miles.

Thanks for all the replies. Since I initially took the car to the dealer; an independent Porsche mechanic also told me it was the clutch. But this guy told me that the flywheel should be replaces also and it will take at least 15 hours!!!!!! Are there any honest people left in the world...maybe they are all in New Orleans at the local Walmart (bad joke) Anyway, I have one more guy to take the car to. I will let you know the outcome.

Isn't funny that most P car owners are some what successful but most of the mechanics think we are idiots...
