Default 2nd Gear feels 'Notchy' is this normal?

Hello,

I've just bought a 1998 C2 996. It's the best toy I've ever owned but I've noticed that shifting from 1st to second gear is quite a bit less smooth than moving through the other gears. It is almost as if moving from 1st to 2nd requires one and a half clicks to engage second gear fully. If I'm not alert and make sure that 2nd in fully engaged then it occassionally 'pops out'.

I know that the clutch was changed prior to the purchase by an independent specialist, could this be partially responsible.

Could you please let me know if this is normal for a 996 gearbox.

Many thanks,

Bryan

Welcome!

It sounds lilke just an adjustment needed in the shift linkage or the selector cable. Or the plastic linkage connecting the shifter and cable has worn and needs replacing. A simple job to fix at your OPC.

Default Thank you

Cheers, I've booked the car in for a 'road test' with Porsche East London tomorrow morning. Hopefully when I tell them this they won't claim I need a new gearbox!

Well I don't think it will come to that at least I hope not for your sake. Mine goes in on Moday for a new gearbox ti Mann Island, Liverpool and it's costing me an arm & leg!
Mine shifts perfectly and never misses or jumps a gear.......but man does it whine. It's now lowder than my fabspeed!

Default Panic Over

Just to bring you up to date on this one. Have had the car road tested by a technician at Porsche. He reckoned it was quite smooth by the standards of some other cars.

Apparently the 6 speed gearbox requires more 'conviction' when changing gear than the 5 speed I had in my old 2.5 boxster. So, looks like I was being a bit paranoid!

There a history of popping out of 2nd gear on 996's resulting in a new transmission install for free but not sure how far back they do the 'free' part.

Looks like you were right Scouser. The car broke down a couple of days ago. Gear stick would only go fowards and backwards and felt 'floppy'. 2nd gear was still engaged and could move the car so thankfully the gearbox was spared.

Have it at reading OPC who have traced the problem and will be replacing the selector cable for around £500 (including labour!).
