Default Crest removal on 3-spoke steering wheel

Does anyone know if the crest badge on the 3-spoke steering wheels can be removed? Are they just stuck on with adhesive or is there some hardware that is holding them on. I don't want to pry mine off and accidentally ruin it if it is held on by other than an adhesive. Reason is I want to replace it with a silver version. TY.

I'd like to do the exact same thing, but somehow I don't think it's that easy.

Think of that projectile coming at you when the airbag goes off...

1. I believe that the way the airbag deploys the new crest would not be a problem. I also believe that it's a fairly major job to remove the factory crest. I changed mine by just gluing a silver one over the gold one. Surprisingly it does not "stick out" and fits perfectly.

Does anyone know exactly how the airbag deploys? Does it pop up, over or split? I heard that they solidly rivet the gold crest into the airbag vinyl from behind. Seems to me that a flying non riveted silver badge could literally poke an eye out in an unfortunate airbag deployment. That is what is stopping me from covering the silly gold badge in my all silver car.

I believe (altho I can't find the diagram) that the airbag cover lifts from the bottom releasing the airbag so the cover itself lifts up rather than popping out. If I can find the diagram I'll post it, but I did check that out before I stuck on the silver emblem.

I remember reading that the emblem is attached to the air bag cover by two pins. Although I've never done it (only read about it), the way to change the emblem is to remove the air bag cover, cut the two pins to remove the old (gold) emblem, then glue the new silver emblem in place...

Just found the message I had read. It was a PM from Michelle (PorscheBabe on 6Speedonline). Here you go:

"Once you remove the airbag you will find studs with plastic rivits - you cut it there, pull it off and silicone the new one on. The thicker steering wheel doesn't matter because the airbag is the same. If you haven't done this, I suggest having someone experience do it with you or just have someone do it for you. IMHO

I had two different people doing it for me, one to disconnebt and take apart the airbag the other put the new one on for me. He's total perfection, I wanted it on straight
I only do exhaust, bodywork etc.. I was too nervous to touch the interior"

Hope this helps...

Here's how the airbag deploys... not my car.

You have to replace the airbag.

I like what Don did.

I'd probably drip glue all over the place and put it on crooked...or else I'd do the same thing.

I'll just have to live with it, I guess.

That just does not seem right that the airbag deploys thru a tear in the airbag cover. I would have thought that it flipped upwards.

It seems like that photo is from a unit that someone tried to pry the badge off and it blew up on them.

I did it... you unscrew the nuts on the back of the airbag piece and carefully pull off the cover. Next you take a dremel and cut the rivit off. After that you carefully epoxy the new badge on. Not too difficult. I think mine came out okay, just be careful of the excess epoxy when putting the new badge on.

The PITA factor does not warrent this mod. I am the only one who will ever notice that my silver hood crest does not match my gold steering wheel crest. I can live with that - I can't live with a screwed up airbag.
