Default Starters: Different designs interchangeable

I'm looking to replace my starter and it appears that there are two different designs for the starters: A long shaft design and a snub-nose design. Are these different design interchangeable or are they unique per application that I wasn't able to determine? Both design are shown to be applicable to my 2003 4S at various sites. Which one is preferable?

Long Shaft Bosch SR0451N: 99660410700

Snub-Nose Bosch SR0808N: 99660410300

996-604-107-00 is for Mezger engines (Turbo, GT3, and GT2). 996-604-103-00 is for all M96/97 engines including your 4S.

What he said. And, get a brand new Bosch starter, not a re-manned starter. You can get one on Amazon.

Bought mine new off Amazon a couple years ago for about $120. Looks like they're currently out of stock there, and quite a bit more expensive elsewhere.

Whats wrong with the refurbished? Sadly I had no choice as mine was finished and wanted a new unit but it was B/O. My only comfort is FCP Euro’s lifetime warranty.
