Default 2000 Convertible top question

New to the 996 series (have 991's) but I bought a 2000 996 convertible and was told in order for the top to drop you need to have the parking brake on? Is that the case? Just wondering.

You can pull up the parking brake "one click", which doesn't really engage the brake, but allows you to operate the top. I snipped the wire (I think the pink one?) to disable the speed sensor, so now I can pull the parking brake up one click, and operate the top while rolling slowly through a parking lot, or whatever.

Have you tried without the parking brake? Here are the conditions from the service manual:
The convertible top is actuated up to model year 2002 if:
  • Terminal 15 is connected via ignition.
  • The parking brake input is connected to ground (parking brake engaged).
  • No speedometer signals greater than 5 km/h (3 mph are present.
  • Engine compartment lid is closed (input not at ground potential).
The convertible top is actuated as of model year 2003 if:
  • Terminal 15 is connected via ignition.
  • The parking brake input is connected to ground (parking brake engaged).
  • No speedometer signals greater than 50 km/h (30 mph) are present.
  • Engine compartment lid is closed (input not at ground potential).
Mine is a 2003, and according to this still requires parking brake engagement - so why is the speedometer signal threshold up to 50km/h? I can confirm I do not need the pbrake engaged at a stop or moving. I haven't tried it up to 50 km/h (to worried about bumps and wind), but I have definitely tried it up to about 20 km/h (13?mph?) The requirement for the brake is NOT in my owner's manual, so it could also be a mistake in the service manual and it did change in 2003 when the speed limitation was increased.

On the 2000, it requires the parking brake engaged and Zero speed. I did the mod frisbee91 mentioned above about 12 years ago. It works great and is easy to do. I can pull the brake lever to the first click and operate the roof while moving. I decided to do that mod after getting stuck in slow moving traffic and it started to drizzle. It was in a construction zone and there was no where to pull over.

Yes, on the MY99, the parking brake must be engaged (if only partially) to operate the convertible top
