Default PO cost $2500, it is worth it?

I called the dealer asking how much it would cost certify 1999 996 w/12K miles to be a PO. He said it would be about $2500 and I would get 2 year warranty. I don't think this is such a good deal. What is the chance that I will be spending $2500 next 2 years for repairs ? I plan to drive less than 5K miles /year.
I know you guys were talking abut RMS leak. For example, how much would it cost to fix RMS? (knock on the wood!)
Any opinion?

I paid my Porsche dealer $1600 for a two-year Porsche Certified Warranty on my '99 with 29K miles.

I've received three quotes (for a '99 with 27k) from Porsche dealers ranging from $2400 to $4000 for a 24 month plan and $2700 to $4000 on a 36 month plan. So obviously it varies by dealer. All with $100 deductable. You've got to remember that the dealer makes a good profit by selling you these, so it depends on how greedy they are. Get the information on the plan you're interested then go home and research if you can buy it directly or through a discount warranty seller. It's the same plan either way.

So $1600 for two year sounds like a great plan. Bill, what plan and company is that through? I may look that up myself.

Oh, and ubergeek... RMS is about $800. But really warranty covers "peace of mind" as much as your engine gaskets!

I recently purchased a 99 from a dealer and paid $1600 for the factory warranty extension. They told me that was what Porsche charged them and offered to take it off the price if I would have them not sell it with the Porsche certification. I elected to keep it for peace of mind.

As for whether its worth it or not I have to assume Porsche knows the expected warranty cost to service the car and $1600 allows them to make a small profit on average. Purchasing the warranty mitigates your risk to the cost of the warranty in case you have a car with higher than average repair costs.

Good luck purchasing the 911!

matterhorn, thanks for the information.
Gee.. i have been always wondering how much it would cost to fix RMS. I thought it was something that would cost $2-3K to fix. The car I am about to buy has only 12K miles and the owner (my buddy) has never abused the car. It is the same color as yours 1999 Guards Red C2 Aero and I will post the pic this weekend.

Ubergeek, yes $800 doesn't sound bad, but you need to know that just replacing the RMS or intermediate shaft seal may not fix the problem. Many people have had luck with one replacement while others have had multiple repairs. The worst case scenario is that the dealer determines your engine needs to be replaced. Now you are looking at quite a bit more than $800. If you havn't already, do a search for RMS. Good luck.

I'm SOL since I already own my car, but if a dealer offered me the Porsche cert warr for $2500 i'd jump on it... Every time you even drive by the dealership it costs a few hundred bucks...granted, on a 99, it will only give you 12 more months over coverage, since the coverage is 6 years/100k miles since orig in service date...unless they are offering an aftermarket warr.

i have family in the reinsurance biz - i've been told that dealers have up to 100% markup in warranties, so there is ALWAYS room to negotiate.

Just like LoJack - my dealer started at $1K and I got him down to $595.

Just for information:

The dealer certified Porsche Warr -- from the factory -- adds TWO years to the car up to 100k. This is the case for a car even out of factory warr -- like many 1999 cars would be.

I know that they will allow a car that is 6 years old to be in the program -- they also would get the two years --up to 100k. As long as the car passes for the program you can get the warr. The dealer may need --- and most likely will need to do work on an older car -- so this will add to the price of the car. The dealer still pays Porsche the 1600.00

I think that people are mixing up the new (last summer) factory program and aftermarket products from third parties.

PCNA had to do this -- BMW/ MB/ JAG etc -- they are all doing it.

It gives the dealers a BIG selling point -- and it gets people to buy into a brand. It also raises the used car prices.

yeldogt,
you are correct. the po is different than aftermarket warranties. the car has to be certified and corrected as neccesary to be certified. if new tires/brake/etc are required, i have to pay for them. i decided not to get the warranty. i just did not make mouch sense. if i am going to spend all my money to make the car perfect, it better not have a major problem in 2 years. if 996 w/12k miles has a major engine problem, i assure everyone that this will be on the cover of national magazines :-) but i am sure 996 is just as good as other cars.. thx everyone.

I called couple dealers in LA, and they said certification is only available to cars they sell. So, is aftermarket warranty my only choice?

that's correct. they can only CPO only if they sell. Then again, having it covered for only 2 years for $2500 is not that a good deal.
