lots of cool info, lots more questions, lol
Adrian Streather's book 996: The Essential Companion has some info on the X51 and Power Up/Carrera Cup packages. He quotes 25 for the Japanese market and 30 for the German market. Another source in the UK (apparently closely associated with Porsche) quoted around 1500 factory 996.1's with the X51 option world-wide. Without Porsche actually verifying these numbers it is anyone's guess, but they don't pop up for sale very often so I think these numbers may be close.

Default Shipping

I know this is probably the wrong place to ask, but so many smart people. Anybody have experience with shipping/cargo companies from Japan to US?

I have a few options, but want to ask the community about good or bad experiences. I am currently talking to Schumacher out of California. I also have a local friend that broker services, but again seeking best possible experience.

Apologies, don't want to hijack the thread, please point me in the right direction of an existing thread on topic. thanks

I can help. I moved from Japan to the US in 2020, and brought with me a '92 M5 E34 at the time.

I used Schumacher Logistics in RORO. They did a good job overall but I got my stereo stolen from the car when it reached the US as they are leaving the cars unattended on a lot during the customs clearance process. Their insurance only covered Total Loss so I didn't get anything and was told it is unfortunately a fairly common occurrence. So you might want to explore how to cover that with some other insurance.

... I eventually sold the M5 when I moved to California due to CARB certification and that's how I bought the 996 and ended up on this forum

this is great info, thank you very much. the car will be insured through my Auto insurance while in transit over ocean, and upon arrival. out of curiosity, they made a strong distinction between having the vehicles delivered to their facility, or an independent facility at another port of entry. Was your M5 delivered to their facility?

Morning
My company currently imports Porsches from Japan, we have been importers for 31 years. We specialize in Early production 996's and ROW Boxsters. I own one of the 20 "Power Up Editions" as well
If you would like to message me, I am happy to discuss importation.

Morning
I own one of the "power Up" cars as well. I'm an importer that specializes in Early production 996's as well as high line Japanese 4x4's. Love the fact you found the original Porsche Japan brochure images. Do you have a higher resolution copy of it. Ive only been able to find low quality images.
We are based in Blue Ridge GA
Thanks
Sean

I think a dedicated thread for Power Up Editions is warranted.

So where are your clients buying their Japanese Porsches from? Ebay.jp or?

Here's some more interesting info from "The 996 companion", a very well researched book on the 996. I infers there may be even more than 25, but does
not state it emphatically. Thought I'd add the intrigue! Could it be a factory refurb Cup car? What say you?
