Question regarding 996.1 C2 Cabrio clam shell motor installation
 

Just had my convertible top and clam shell motor replace on my 1999 Carrera (996.1). The clam shell motor came from the local Porsche dealship and is correct for my model. When my mechanic installed it therre were additional parts required to connect it to the transmission. Additionally, it appears there are more parts needed to connect it to the hydrolic motor... I believe it is just a mount for stabuility. The clam shell opens and closes properly with it laying in the back, but I certainly don't want to settle for it laying in the back.

The original motor was shaped a little different so that it mounted snuggly to the hydrolic pump. Has anyone else replaced their clam shell motor with a brand new one and had the same problems? Any suggestions where I could acquire a 'converter' that would bridge the gap between the new clam shell motor and where the old clam shell motor mounted to the hydrolic pump?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have 00 C4 and the clamshell motor mounted on two stud type screws near the hydraulic motor for the top. The clamshell when mounted partially covers the lower part of the hydraulic pump. It mounts on its"side" so the larger flat part points toward the rear of the car and the smaller edge points to the floor

According to the local dealer the 04 MY mounting brackets are what the replacement motor fits. There are a few parts that had to be added to the motor to make it match the 99-03 MY mounting brackets. I have acquired a few of the additional parts, but I'm still short.. the motor will not mount properly. The dealer is now ordering me an additional mounting bracket that he thinks may have to replace the original bracket from '99.

I'll update if/when this is resolved.

I need to take a look at mine but based on memory the top picture is pretty much what it’s supposed to look like. The metal bracket in your last picture mounts to the two studs up top above and behind the hydraulic pump. The release bolt for the clamshell goes through the largest round hole and the two standoff mounts attach to the smaller holes adjacent to that. The long black thing mounts on the two standoffs

I have these 2 brackets. If these are what you looking forward, send me some money and I get em out to you tomorrow.

This is all there was for mounting brackets on an 04 btw.

I see the issue... You have the vertical hydraulic pump instead of the horizontal newer one so your arrangement is different. Sorry, I didnt catch that at first. This is the newer pump that you would need to make it all arrange as OEM. You could go that way and swap the pump. I just dismantled my interior for a track build....
Otherwise you probably just need to drill some holes and get some bolts and make it fit is my guess.

Turns out the dealer did give me the correct bracket to convert the new clam shell motor to the '99-'01 (maybe '02) original mounting bracket. After taking my parts to my parts guy at the local Porsche delar (the original mounting bracket, converting mounting bracket, and the original clam shell motor) he was able to see the struggle my mechanic was facing. After reviewing the parts, he did some research and returned with a 6 page manual for making it work. Essentially, both mounting brackets have to be machined to fit the motor to the vehicle. In fact, there are different directions based on the MY you are driving which are all outlined the the 6 page manual.

It is possible to repair your existing clamshell motor. Porsche sells a kit #99656167301 but there are no instructions, so I made the following video on Youtube
