Bdron, love yah man and the give and take. We should all be considered damn lucky to have any 996. Mezger or M96. If I had silly money, I would have one of each 996 model just for giggles.

30K is still 10K more than I paid for a 2/98 build that was optioned with M030 suspension, hardback sportseats, lsd and 408 hollow spokes.
I don’t think people will ever be able to get past the amber lights and the similarities to the much cheaper Boxster.

930S & 944 had same door handles, same buttons & *****, same seats, even the exact same headlight part numbers

Maybe it’s a personality or generation thing but I have zero interest in any other 911 type
Older are fuddy and underpowered
Newer are cheap and overcomplicated
996 is just a sweet, sweet spot

My ‘72 is more engaging on a back road, but the 996 is so much more practical and I can drive it year-round, so it brings me more pleasure overall. Honestly though I must say the ‘72 is more reliable. Currently the 996 is at the shop again with a persistent misfire… sigh.

I would “take” one, but absolutely not in lieu of a Mezger. The air cooled Turbos are really just turbocharged Carrera motors. Granted they are all dry sump, but so are the Mezgers.
The Mezgers are bonafide Porsche Motorsports endurance racing motors. Turbo or NA: the air cooled are not.
I don’t think that is completely understood

Funny, but humor aside: to my knowledge we have not yet seen a Mezger rebuilt from use

But just to bring some things back to Earth and since this is an economic type thread, I will say that the "Mezger" used in competition gets rebuilds at 50 hours use at a cost of $35k at each 50 hour rebuild.interval, and the gear box as well at a cost of $10k . Used at high level DE events, rebuilds at 100 hours are common.( yea, still cost $35k)
As far as failures, yes they have them also, The 997 Turbo Mezger is known for the cams slipping, I also have seen GT3 slip the timing ring on dual mass flywheel,, and also aluminum bolts breaking on the vario cam actuators, broken timing chains, ect. along with other issues that can be catastrophic.
That said these cars are fewer in numbers and the owners are not whinners, so the issues are not as widely known.
But anyway, carry on !!
