Default Get ready for 15% Ethanol

Feds just announced that, in response to demands from the "Corn Belt", that starting in 2020 they would up the Ethanol in gas from 10% to 15% and allow its use year round.

Great news for the big farm corporations, but I doubt that this will be good for our engines. I did a quick search on the subject, but found no threads. Anyone out there an expert on ethanol and high compression engines?

Here is the article in todays NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/07/u...l-farmers.html

BTY, the push for ethanol was made before fracking and coal sands made the US an exporter of both oil and refined gasoline. We do not need ethanol in our gas.

I am waiting for the new WaWa to open down the street. Supposedly going to have ethanol free high octane gas. Probably have to pay a premium for NOT having something mixed into it. Just like laundry soap...buy the fragrance free stuff and you pay more because they don't ADD fragrance or perfume. The world is a strange place.

I'm tired of politicians talking about the dangers of 'socialism' while handing out billions of dollars of our tax money to their big corp AG buddies to grow things nobody needs or wants.

Long term all this does is push people towards EV's even faster; good for the planet I guess, not good for my 996

Just following the Porsche pricing model: remove stuff from the car, give it a special name, and charge you more for it. You're buying RS soap.

Isn't ethanol actually bad for the engine? Why is it even a thing at all.

If you have an engine that's designed to run on 100% ethanol, you can get a ton of power out of it. Indy cars ran 100% ethanol for a couple of years, but now run E85. Nascar uses E15.

It makes no sense to run E10 or E15 in passenger cars. It takes more energy to produce ethanol from corn than you get burning the ethanol. It is a net loss. The only country I am aware of that has a net gain from burning ethanol is Brazil, because they can grow a lot of sugar cane which has a higher ethanol yield.

Once again, politics and science diverge.

Eth lowers BTU of gasoline, so you get less miles per gallon. Trump is fixing the stupid in US government as fast as he can which is why devilcrats are tying him up in knots as tight as they can.

Buckee's here has ethanol free gas, but not at all locations, and none are close to me, so I only get it now and then.

Ethanol free is best. Think of ethanol as tofu....it's more or less a filler. An engine can run on it but it takes a hell of lot more of it to make the same power.
