Default Review: 996.2 radiator screens

So I spent a few hours with Eric M. this Saturday test fitting 996.2 radiator screens he is developing. First off, what a friendly and knowledgeable guy! By far one of the most patient and focused "car guy" I've met!
Anyway, the grilles/screen installation is a must for any owner. Mine is an 02, has spent the last 6 years in Florida, and had quite a bit of debris visible inside the inlet. After a few measurements and fittings to ensure the temperature probe hole was aligned to Eric's standard, a quick vacuuming out of the dried leaves and he was set to begin the install. As I was watched and listened to his instructions I thought to myself that this is a modification/improvement that even I could do with my limited skills! The finished product looks like it came from the factory. Very clean and functional appearance.
Anyone looking to keep road debris out of the duct work needs this product!

Nice! You do know that you most likely have only cleaned out about 1/3 of the debris? You really need to remove the bumper and air condenser to clean the accumulated junk between the condenser and radiator.
search the web for bumper removal tutorials, here is one:

Looks awesome. It looks better with the screens than without to me -- much more like what the factory should have done. Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is there any negative impact on airflow with the screens (the screens look a little finer than what I would have expected)?

Thanks. This is an excellent video. Cleaning the radiators is on my to do list, but the actual effort required was unknown to me. This short video makes it easy to see exactly what's involved.

This is great for the many folks that aren't DIY'ers, or are scared off by this kind of project. As an FYI, the the same thing can be achieved with $15 worth of screen from guttersupply.com. I got this tip from one of the GT3 forums, and have to say it works very well. You'll be shocked by the amount of stuff it catches (mine caught large number of grasshoppers recently). It's a lot easier to remove stuff from here than it is to remove the bumper and clean the condenser/radiator area.

I had my bumper cover off this weekend to install a center radiator. I easily made a grill for the center radiator but the side grills would have been much more difficult to do with the time available so I just reinstalled the bumper cover without them. These radiators will fit my needs perfectly. I just ordered my set this morning.

I think the links on the website are broken -- when you click the "Porsche 996" button, it seems like it takes you to the screens for 997's.

These cost me 5$ from a local hardware store. YES FIVE DOLLARS. They are gutter guards. I have had them on my car about 5 years now. Never tarnish from new. Think twice about spending all kinds of soft money for the SO CALLED real porsche radiator screens. I had to remove the front and cut them to shape with ease. BTW one gutter guard cut in half did both sides of the car.

I did the same, although I bought them online and got some spares, so I spent more like $15.

if you watch the video, these are more convenient, since they install without bumper removal, which can be daunting to some people.

I can also see how people that aren't very mechanically inclined would just rather buy a product that is known to fit and work.

I also know people that think something is better when made by a company than something made at home.

I have had people call my diy of things like this "agricultural ". As my teenager would say, "Whatevs".

Functionally they are the same...

I'm a DIY guy, so I struggle to pay so much more for something so easy to make. On the other hand, I fully support the people that prefer to buy, and the vendors that make these products for our community.
