Default Do 996 Turbo Radiators fit in 996.1 C2...Barely

When we went with a 997 3.8 in my Mk1 Aero, I knew I needed more cooling especially since we were expecting around 400HP when it was done. So the challenge was how do we put turbo radiators + center radiator from NORSPEC in car without the room. When Porsche came out with the MK2 turbo the purpose of the headlights was to give clearance to the larger radiator/bracket and also move the headlight cleaner pump. However, I wanted to keep my MK1 headlights. While removing the pump was easy the brackets had to be modified and refabricated in a way that it would still fit in a MK1 Aero bumper. Of course, Charles Dundon magically fit it with some welding and angle manipulation of the bracket and tilting forward the radiator clear the MK1 lights (first pic). However, it was super tight. So with certain lighting you can see the shadow of the slight bulge in the bumper of the radiator bracket in front of the wheel (second pic). Its the only time I could see it. We also opened up the inlet that I wanted to make sure to the casual eye it looks stock. The third picture shows the difference of before (left) and after (right). The result is even with 100 more HP the car is running at 180 F all the time on the track. Really happy with this but beware of the extra work in a MK1.

Why not just go with a set of cst rads. They cool much better and they fit.

i think that is a good question....perhaps because it was cheaper and i could get them the same day. In retrospect i probably should have gone with what you suggest....maybe i will.

Or just do an oem gt3r for their radiator cooling design on the front bumper. That’s what I’ve collected and will use once I find a good deal on a 3.8 swap. I want that swap so bad in my 99 bc I love that car so much. I also own a turbo but I have such a hard love for both the Na and turbo platforms. However the 99 really needs that power ratio bumped up. I’d really love to score an m97 x51 but that’s probably even harder to come by.

If it's any consolation, I wouldn't have noticed the bulge unless you mentioned it. I completely understand the need to improve cooling on these cars especially if you track them regularly. Not my cup of tea but I've seen many people install the center radiator as an easy solution on the Carreras.

From driving m97 motor cars I’ve never seen the temps go above 175F. Is this just due to the 996 ducting? Or fin/material design of the radiators? As I know that the 996 itself runs around 180-185F but from what I’ve understood that’s due to the waterjacket design on a certain bank of the engine.

I have no idea....but since my car with a 3.4 (300hp) was running well over 200F even with a center radiator on the track, I decided to overkill on cooling when I increased the HP by 100HP. Probably didn't need to do all of that because of the better engine design of 997 but at the end of the day, I am happy with the temps.
