My five cents

I have just flushed all coolant and filled up with Porsche OEM and it has been around 80$ (2 bottles)

Given the actual coolants available on the market, I would never mix water direct on the cooling system...

I just bought regular coolant that has the correct ratings/grades/classification. Still don't understand why 996 would need special coolant. Does 996 use a special rubber that will melt with "normal" coolant? Is the aluminum in the 996 different from all the other aluminium engines? Etc etc etc.

My info says that the cooling system total capacity is 22.5 liters, which equals 5.94 gallons. Using the standard 50-50 mix, you'd thus need just shy of 3 gallon-size bottles.

I guess it depends on what you consider huge.

Your link lists a Genuine Porsche price of $37.70 / gal. Local prices for ordinary OAT coolant are around $15 / gal.

That's a markup of 2.5 times. To put it another way, the "Porsche tax" adds 151% to the cost.

The cost to fill the entire system (3 gal of coolant) would be $113 vs $45. The $68 difference (not much on the Porsche scale of costs) would probably be well worth paying if it actually yielded some measurable improvement.

All the equivalent coolant I saw before are similarly priced definitely much higher than $15/gal range. Any links to the said coolant? We need to make sure we are comparing apples to apples.

I hope we're not comparing pre-mix to concentrated P coolants.

Any silicate free OAT coolant will work. I used Peak for my last fill. Just note that it already comes premixed.

I would have to check on the invoice (was done at the workshop), but I remember the price was around 40$ per bottle

You would have to buy twice as much since it's premixed so you're already at/above the Porsche OEM price.

We use Pentofrost. Our local Napa stocks it.

The difference in cost is of little consequence to me. I'd rather use something I can easily purchase on the same day if need be and not wait a day or two for shipping or drive to a dealership.

I can get Pentofrost SF at several local and chain auto parts stores in my relatively rural part of the country. I’d be surprised if it is terribly hard to get other places in the us.
