Sound system questions for 99 Cab
I just replaced the original stereo with a Pioneer NEX 4400 unit. It works great and looks great but at high voltage the sound is distorted. The shop didn't use the original amp saying it wasn't compatible with the new head unit and now saying I need all new speakers and an amp. Does anyone have any insight into this? First, is the original amp really not compatible with the unit and if so do I need an amp? The stats on the unit say it has a built in amp. I'm confused. Thanks for help .

I've connected a newer radio to the OEM amp. It's all about having the correct wiring harness. But the Nokia and HAES amp really lack the punch and so many people replace them with newer amps. It's not uncommon for pro-shops to recommend updating the amp and speakers along with the new head unit. With these systems, you're only as good as your weakest link.

The door speakers are 2 ohm and are matched to the factory amp. That's most likely your issue.

The weakest link in the OEM system is the speakers. You can get the best head unit and amp and it will still sound like crap with the stock speakers. The first thing I changed (years ago) was the speakers with Focals. Sounded much better. Then I changed the amp and it was much much better. Still have the stock head unit and I will run it up against any set up that has the stock speakers.

I do agree changing the speakers is a good idea, but the stock head unit still won't have todays technology which is what I wanted. This set up cost me under $450, I installed in in a few hours and it makes the car look more like a 2014 than a 2001. Crutchfield made this a real simple install. It has as a USB port and a HDMI port. Also the red arrow points to a button I hacked and now use as a garage door opener so I do not have to have one clipped to the visor. That is the best mod ever if you ask me.
