This was my first time setting up the battery charger on this car. I read the owners manual and, to be honest, ive never seen a setup like this on any other car. It said to hook it up to a fuse you pull out of the fuse box, then connect the positive cable to the handle where the door goes. I followed the instructions to the letter ( see attached) just want some validation that I did it right. Is this the right setup?
Your setup should work, provided that the fusebox lead is at 12v. Note that you've (correctly) connected the black (= ground) lead to the body of the car. It would be a serious mistake to connect the positive lead there, as your text implies.
Definitely simpler: Attach charger to the car's electrical system via a plug that connects to the cigarette lighter.
This is typically how you jump the hood/rear hatch releases (to open frunk and engine lid if battery is dead). You don't need to go this route, just to charge the battery. Either simply open the frunk and remove the battery cover (plastic cover with two thumb fasteners up toward the windscreen) and place clamps directly on battery posts....or you can charge directly to the cigarette lighter, but you need to gear up an adaptor to plug into the lighter port.

Ok that sounds like a great way to charge the battery, I never knew that was possible. So theres an attachment that you can charge the battery via the cigarette lighter? where would I find one of these? By the way thanks for the reply

Since I have owned my 996 cab (13 yrs+), I have been using the OEM Porsche trickle charger through the cigarette lighter port for the winter months hibernation and never had any issue. You can use Google to locate one online, many places have them. Cheers,
Seems like an appropriate way to trickle charge a German car. Goes with the territory of over-engineering instead of a more direct, simple, fool-proof way of accessing the battery under the frunk.
Direct to battery or cigarette lighter. That way you can shut your door! The instructions you followed are for hooking another battery to assist in opening the frunk on a MK2 with a dead battery. And by trickle charger assume you mean battery maintainer.

Why not just connect directly to the battery? Or add a lead from the battery to a convenient location - Battery Tender makes some decent ones with SAE connectors.
