C2 struts have them too. The whole strut housing turns when the front wheels turn. In fact, the strut is the pivot axis around which the steering angle rotates. If the top mounts didn’t have bearings, because of the weight of the car, the springs would cause resistance against the wheels turning to steer, especially while cornering.

Thanks Joey.

Is there a slick way to clean old grease from bearings and regrease or is it still a toothbrush/ simple green thing?

I want to put a set of adjustable Elephant Racing mounts in mine. They are somewhat expensive however.

So, how bad are after market rubber top mounts vs. OEM? Which ones are holding up?

ok, maybe this is a problem. my worst clunking was, not surprisingly, over bumps.

Tooth brush sacrificed. Simple green because I don't like breathing volatile organic brain melting vapors.

Ok, got a day off. I've got replacement springs, so I'm ready to re assemble the spring/strut. I will also be replacing the 18 year old top strut mounts with new ones before they fail.

It looks like the top bearing gets water exposure from below in the wheel well. Is this a marine grease application? Or just white lithium bearing grease?

Those aren't H&R sport springs. They look stock. Look up the paint markings - looks like two white dots, but can't be sure - it looks like some might be scraped off...

I greased my new strut mount bearings with silicone grease. No moisture absorbance. Quiet now for years. Weird to see the broken spring...must have been one helluva pothole!

Thanks, it really doesn't need bearing grease per se since it probably won't see even a full revolution but once in a blue moon but the race looks like it could be vulnerable to water and contamination along the inner ring. What does the factory do here?
