I knew that, in my enthusiasm I overlooked! I know PDK is considered the pinnacle but for someone who has driven both what is your opinion on the Tip vs PDK? I have made my decision and will be getting a TT tip!

Certainly, PDK is better. But You can't get PDK on a 996. Another comment regarding tip... 2nd generation is MUCH better than 1st. 250 shift map programs, vs 5.

Yes on the Mercedes transmission and it's said to be bulletproof. The transmission on my Mercedes shift super smooth in manual mode.

I have a .2 and I am in M mode 90% of the time. I find that in D mode, the car feels sluggish as it is always in a higher gear. So in M mode I drive and shift as if it was a manual car to keep the revs in the power band.
I bought a manual steering to install paddles and to lose the thumb buttons. I used to hate the thumb buttons but I think I know why they designed it that way, so you can drive in M mode eat a burger and shift with one hand!
Do I miss driving manual? Sure, sometimes, especially heel toe/rev match down shifts. But the tip has this slight latency between gear change that if you blip the throttle you can rev match, however I'm not sure if that puts any strains on the gearbox.

I left the Tip buttons on so that on the rare occasion I wanted to drive "one handed", like eating a sausage/egg/cheese breakfast, it was possible, because I drive 99.9% manual mode...

Is there a reliable source of info related to the 5 maps on the early tips? I have a 1999 that shifts 1-2 at 6400, even in manual mode. Other gears go to redline. Not that I'm going to buy a Durametric and map it myself - mostly just curious.

I've got a 996.2 Tip, but my comment is regarding the shift points you mention. You may not care, but...…..I'm not sure why you'd want to shift at RPM's any higher than low to mid 6K's max. These cars run out of torque above that and there really no performance benefit in running the snot out of it to 7K RPM. I track my Tip (which keeps up with manual 996's just fine) and I've looked at lap times running it up to almost 7K vs shifting just above 6K. And the lap times are slightly quicker shifting at just over 6K. Just my 2 cents, FWIW.

Cheers..

Do you have, or know the link to the how-to for adding the paddles? I'm seriously thinking of doing that mod.

Good point...shift point, that is. It kind of feels like an early shift, but the box is likely keeping the motor in the proper power/torque range. This Sunday is the first auto-cross with the 911. It'll be interesting to see how that goes. I may try both modes as an experiment. I don't plan to mess with the tiptronic, until such time as it would need to be rebuilt....which is likely never.

Thanks for the reply.

I track my C4S Tip with no issues. Not sure if it's faster/slower than an exact-same C4S manual, but if it's faster, I'd blame my weight on the additional lap times lol...

I agree with David on the RPM thing too, having recently tracked mine. I think my instructor said our engines peak at/around 5500rpm for power and torque so that's where he'd have me upshift. Could be wrong but I do gotta say watching the rev counter max out at 7100 and then kick up to 3rd was pretty cool!
