Default Coolant overflow drains onto coil?

I changed my coils and plugs yesterday. The driver's side rear coil was a mess. The other five coils were in almost identical condition. Each had a small hair line crack but nothing like that left rear coil. I noticed that above the left rear coil there was a drain hose. I think it's the drain for the overflow basin next to the coolant cap. It looks like it drips right onto the coil. I wonder if that's why this coil was in such bad shape. Is it supposed to be there? I used some tie wrap to move it further back away from the coil.

Yes, the coolant overflow hose just drips onto the coil. You should not have coolant overflow. Make sure you have the latest cap ending in 04 and it should not be a problem. You can re-route the coolant overflow hose any where you want, or get a longer piece of hose so it drips below the coil pack.

Yes. If left to it's own, the overflow hose will fall right onto the coil. Reroute it to the outside of the metal shield.

Thanks for the replies. I just bought the car. My only problem was a CEL on a rainy day along with a slightly rough running engine. Since changing all six coils, no problems rain or shine.

Ordered the new cap too!!!

Same experiences as montauk with cracked coils. It was a soggy day here in Ohio and I had just ran the car up to around 6k rpm with my 10 year-old son in the car. That was all she wrote for that coil and I chugged back home on 5 cylinders. Check engine light and code(s) for the cylinder in question - for me it was cylinder #5, along with a phantom code for cylinder #3 and a "multiple misfires detected" code.

Joe, I admit, I'm clueless to what you're talking about. What's wrong with older expansion tank caps? Leak? When did Porsche start doing them right?

I'm not sure when exactly they revised/fixed the cap, but the latest ones have a part number ending in "04". I guess that could be the year.

I believe it's just the revision, not the year. So it indicates Rev. 4.

If you have an old tank and you put on the "4" cap.....don't be surprised if the tank cracks when the engine is hot. Just sayin'.

My cap part number is 996.106.447.00

Is that the old type? Could it be the cause of my car leaking coolant? I looked at it and it looks dry around the cap after I drove the car tonight.

Yes, that is the old style cap. Porsche has made revisions to the cap and the latest version ends in 04. The cap is known to be a problem (leaking under pressure), hence the revisions. It is simply a good idea to get the latest revision...see here #5 http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=105-20

Thank you, Joe. I went ahead and ordered the new coolant cap. I appreciate it!

Just want to say Thank You again. I updated coolant cap came in and went to install it and noticed the old cap definitely had been leaking coolant (notice picture). I ordered a coolant expansion tank thinking that was the cause of the puddle under the car, but this might be the culprit. I'm not returning the tank though since it's obvious that these things are pretty common fail items. Judging from the picture, you can see that Porsche improved the inner rubber gasket. Looks thicker. Interesting rubber surround near the center vent.
