I have the definitive answer now. My battery was getting old and not holding a charge very well. It never failed to start the car...just was getting weak. So out with my 5.5 year old Die Hard. Sent the battery tray out for sand blasting and refinishing. 4 days later, in goes new battery. Fired it up and now have my trusty outside temp display back. I don't think it was the battery exchange that did it...I think it needed a hard reset by having the battery disconnected for 4 days. Probably 30 minutes would do it.
