1999 996 brakes
Hi! I recently had my brake pad indicator light come on, so it's time to do my brakes. When I search for pads & rotors, I see a wide range of prices and brands. My 996 has 137k miles on it and it's now a daily driver to work (quickly). I don't need anything for racing, but if anyone has any advice on what brands I should look to, I would appreciate it. The local Porsche dealership quoted each rotor at about $250/ea and pads were another couple of hundred.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I prefer Sebro rotors and Pagid pads. If you DIY, you can do the entire job for under $450 with quality aftermarket parts.

I bought rotors from Brake Performance. They are zinc coated, machined in the USA, and their premium versions have a lifetime warranty against warping. Sounded like a good proposition to me. We will see how they perform.

I purchased the Akebono Euro ceramic pads to use with them as well. Very low dust compared to the Textars and no squealing.

I bought a set of Textar pads and Meyle rotors in the meantime. They were about $400 total, as I recall. That is what my driving instructor recommended until I get better and add some other mods to the car. He said that when they get worn, just throw them all away and install a new set.

Sorry, I have Sebro rotors and Textar pads on my 2002, and Meyle rotors and Textar pads on the 2000. Both are economical ways to go, Meyle rotors are less expensive, but Sebro is better quality. Zimmerman are another low cost option. I’ve been browsing Pagid pads for track use, and got confused.

+1 for Akebono's. My Mercedes and Lexus both have them. no noise and I can go weeks without any noticeable brake dust. My 996 can't go a few days without the wheels looking like crap with the OE Porsche pads and squeal like hell. Also as a mechanic I can tell you customers who lover their cars LOVE when we sell the Akebono's. They almost always come back bragging about the lack of dust. There is also another recent thread about a low dust option and you will see many other members stating the same.

I am far from an expert here, but I got my set of meyle rotors and ceramic pads on ebay, another member says he has them for sale to for around $250. I just learned the value of bedding them in properly and now they are great. I have about 2,000 miles on them so far in a few months. Economical, not race inspired.
Look at the thread "Pads that don't dust too much".

I think I pay about 65ea for rotors. They are aftermarket but I’ve been using them for years - I have to change them every season - but it all balances out.
