Default Mismatched Tires

Hi,
i just noticed that I have 2 different sizes of Continental all seasons on the rears of my 2000 996. One is 265/35/18 the other is 285/30/18. How significant is this difference. Just trying to make it through the winter and don’t see going over 80mph any time soon.
Thanks.

I am having a difficult time imagining this being safe. Look at the date codes and wear of the tires. If they are newer and not that worn, why not buy 1 tire. If they are older/worn, then buy 4.

You tires are how your car stops, turns and accelerates. Good tires are a must.

Check here: https://www.discounttire.com/learn/tire-size-calculator

In your case, the difference in tire height is .56 inches, and the difference in tire circumference is 1.76 inches. This should make the car's stance uneven and unbalanced and the speedometer will be off a bit. Like you said it should be fine at lower speeds.

Two things I always say aren't worth compromising are brakes and tires. I always imagine how I would feel if I have an accident and it could've been prevented has I had the right tires or brakes.

With that said, with your current setup, if the tires are different height, that puts stress on the differential as well.

I think you should change the tires as soon as you can.

Agree, change the tires as soon as possible. There’s nothing more important than the tires that connect you to the road. Having uneven tires will eventually wear out the diff.

Wow - why wasn't this picked up when the PPI was done before purchase?

Half inch difference is a lot for the differential spider gears, I would change ASAP, your not the first this has happen too, and seen the damage caused.

It's one thing to have front tires of one brand and another brand on the rear. I'd never consider two different sizes of tires on the rear. I'd replace the rear set with new rubber asap.
