I did a walk-in today to get my new key head assembled to a blade, with a barcode attached, programed to my 2004 996. Car sat in queue for ~ 30 minutes, this I expected due to no appointment. Left ~ 1 hour later with two working keys $190 out the door with a complimentary car wash. (note key head bought elsewhere for $130) No bar code for the working key that I drove it in with. Bar code only for the new transmitter head/blade assembly.

Sounds like I got brushed off by Spokane Porsche. Super maddening.
Thanks for all the info.

Sorry for the late reply Carl, Just found the post. The dealer I dealt with has since lost its Porsche franchise. But, in terms of referring your dealer to an authoritative source (which they won't feel flattered by) there's Suncoast, Sunset, Auto Atlanta and I'm guessing nearly any larger dealership.

Frank, greatly appreciate your information. I am getting my keys cut at keysinthepost, but can I ask where you get your remote head (with tags)? I just don't want to mess this up when I go to the local dealer. Thanks!

Lots of people buy them from Suncoast Porsche online. I also bought mine online from a Porsche dealership, and I took it to my local dealership for programming. It costs me about $175 for setup and programming in addition to the keyfob. Like others have mentioned, with the 996, programming new keyfobs is not a problem as long as you have at least one working keyfob. Don't purchase used keyfobs on ebay. Purchase a new one from a certified Porsche dealer. Your key will come with a bar code for programming. Do NOT discard it!

Good luck!

Ordered key blades from Chris and just ordered 2 remotes from Sunset for a Black Friday deal of $120 a piece. Looking forward to finally getting an extra key!

That’s great. Just don’t take it to Spokane Porsche.

OK, I will X them off my list (and a bit too far for me, but what a beautiful city), I will try Germain Porsche in Ann Arbor and report back.
