Default Foam in AC Vents?

Hi,
I have foam in my AC Vents.

I'm guessing that some soft of air filter has broken up. The foam blows into the cabin when the AC is on. I guess 20years in the Australian heat has caused the material to break down.

It doesnt look like the material from the passenger air filter as described here: https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...Air_Filter.htm

Anyone know where it's from and what I do need to do to replace it?

Common symptom. Foam is from a/some flapper door(s) inside the heater/a-c system. Have read some repair documentation seems very involved. There are others who just clean it up for a while until it stops. Good luck with your decision. Might want to search this forum for the repairs.

I followed this instruction, http://986forum.com/forums/performan...-debris-3.html. But I could only get to the front metal flap and not the one behind it.

... I just did a search and there are a bazzillion posts on the same thing LOL

My bad. Funnily enough the Porsche specialist wasn't sure what it was - although he was mainly working on Air-cooled models. I dont think he saw many 996s.

I think I'll just hoover out what I can and live with it. Not like it gets that cold here anyway :-)

I am going through this right now as well...there are a few searches to follow on here if you want to go through the troubles. The link above is decent. I think it is more hassle than it is worth. I am in the same mind set as mentioned and just cleaning and then forgetting about it.

At some point enough of the foam will deteriorate that you won't get hardly any heat. Their is a rennlist member that has figured out a hack to fix the problem so you'll get heat without having to take the dashboard apart. His handle is AMCPILOT, feel free to PM him. My heat is still functioning fine, but some day you'll have to deal with the issue, or go with almost no heat.

At some point, not with all, the evaporator will leak.
When you swap out the evap in the box you can replace the rotting foam.

Thanks :-)

i was horrified that some of the procedures to replace the foam involved cutting but ups.

ar this point my 996 is 20 years old and vintage in Porsche’s eyes and increasingly rare over here in AU. I couldn’t cut it up! The horror!

As long as the AC blows cold, I'm good. Got heated seat here in Hawaii anyway (go figure) lol!

Well, mine has been doing this forever and I can no longer effectively direct the vents to defrost/dash vents/floor. Now when I run the A/C the windshield fogs up and water condenses on the outside to the point I have to run the wipers. (Hot and humid here in Mississippi.) I've been having to lay a towel over the defrost vents. Time to do a repair!

My foam is gone, and the heat is now pathetic. Also, as mharrison pointed out, directing the heat is ineffective. My dash is coming out this winter to repair anything I find.

Might want to check the procedure. I can't remember if you go in from the frunk to fix this or not. Removing the dash is a pain in the <expletive>.

That would be very annoying! Thankfully South Australia is a very dry climate.

Thanks!

I used to own one from the 60s/70s. These new ones are much better.

If the worst I've had to deal with so far is some decaying foam debris them I'm doing pretty well :=D
