Default Starting Issue

This is a 2006 996 36k miles with the following symptoms: turn key in ignition, starter does not engage, no solenoid click, nothing. Oil measurement starts (as if brake was not depressed, but it is). Then all hell breaks loose. the key in ignition dinging gets VERY loud, PSM failure displayed, ABS failure displayed, electric cooling fan up front spins like it's going to take off, "move selector to P or N" indication (it's already in P). Sometimes some other crazy messages. Only code thrown is P0503 (Vehicle speed sensor "A" circuit intermittent/erratic/high).
- Battery is strong, I charged it to be sure, then removed it and had it tested to be sure. All good.
- I jump started it as well just to be triple sure. Same results

I read a similar thread about a member who fixed his problem by disconnecting the battery for 10 min. Tried that, no luck.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Seems like a bad relay, not sure where to start.

First of all, got to figure out are you listing the right year or car, 996 went only to midyear 2005, or you have a 997 ?

Check fuses c1-c4 and E1 first.

Check voltage, while the key is turned, using a multimeter.

Didn't bail , I took it to the 997 forum. Problem is not resolved unfortunately. Here's where I am, and I believe I'm now obligated to contribute the eventual resolution back to both forums:

Fuses C1-4, E1 all good. Voltage in old battery was 12.5 but I bought a brand new one just to be 100% positive it was not the battery. It is not ... same multi-system freak out when key is turned. Next, I tore the engine down to the point that I could get to the starter. Voltage reading at starter = voltage reading at battery terminals. Seems to rule out the bad battery cable issue I've read about. When key is turned, the starter solenoid does not receive power, starter gets no opportunity to fire. Sure seems like a relay or switch at this point. Any thoughts on what to inspect next? Another clue perhaps ... multi-system freak out also happens when key is turned, brake pedal is not depressed. This is a tiptronic POS transmission, no clutch involved. I know I know .. it's the wife's car.

Bad ignition switch (most likely just the electrical part)...

Agree with ignition switch. I do not know if the 997's are like a 996, but on a 996 there is a start lock relay in Relay Support 2

Is there just an electrical part? I've found only this in my searches. Also seems to be an expensive part if this is not the problem. Any way to test this outside of trying a new one?

I also swapped relay's 7 and 8 as they are the same part. No luck.

I don't know how to bench test one of those ignition switches. Sunset Porsche has them for $193. That P/N has been superseded by a new part number, so likely that might be your culprit.

Another interesting read on the 997 ignition switch. Cannot find anybody who has found a way to test it. Basically it is a universal receiver RFID detector that detects the pill in the key and tells the car DME and Immobilizer go/no-go, i.e., correct key or incorrect key in the ignition.
