Take it on short vacation?
Greetings, bought a 2000 C2 cab last weekend. Ive put 500 miles on it and just turned 26,000 miles (had Mobil 1 oil changes every year). No issues, no rattles. Considering taking it to Gatlinburg, which will be about a 1200 mile total trip. My intention was to replace the IMSB but that’s going to take a few months. Should I roll the dice? I know the failure rate is around 10% (and likely going up), so there’s a 90% chance that nothing will go wrong. You just read so much about the failure being on low mileage cars. What’s the flatbed bill from TN to Cincinnati? Lol. Probably nothing compared to a replacement engine. 😳

The only way to truly know it's condition is by having a specialist with these cars drop the transaxel and examine the bearing closely by removing the outer seal and testing the center stud for excessive play. The only easy thing you could do by yourself is change the oil and examine the filter by cutting it open. If you see traces of ferrous metal, then that could be the tell tale sign of a IMS bearing beginning to wear out. But 500 miles is not enough time to get an accurate picture. I would think the car would need to be driven more than 3x that amount.

You probably have a heartier dual row bearing, though it's not certain. What's the build date of your car? Open up the driver side door and look on the edge. There is a black decal with a bunch of information on it. The build date will be in the upper right and will be something like 1/00, meaning January 2000.

My general feeling is if you plan to replace it sometime in the future, just do it now so you get the benefit sooner. The low mileage on your car scares me....those tend to be the most susceptible for failure.

Build date is 11/99

Then you have the robust dual row IMSB. Since you are asking for opinions - change the oil/filter, stick an extra quart in the frunk, pack the car and enjoy the car and the trip. If you are concerned about the mileage, I have a 99 (build 7/98) with +142K miles and still going strong on unmolested OE dual row IMSB. Life is short so enjoy it while you can. The car/engine will probably run better when you get back.
