Shopping for 996
#46
I hear you. I love the car, but let me tell you about issues the 996 is known for, it's the engine lol. IMSB, bore scoring, water pump, aos, cam pads, timing chain, coolant tank, ignition coils, alternator, air pump, engine mounts, etc etc. Some of these catastrophic, others are wear items, but all come up frequently enough on the boards. I've replaced most of the things listed at a cost in the 5 digits even thought I've done a good bit myself and my car has 34K miles. And there still things that haven't been addressed on my car that could still make it worthless if they fail.
It's a long way of saying that a brand new RND engine is worth the piece of mind. At 17K, the winning bidder basically paid for an a brand new engine at got the Porsche for free. Just my $0.02 - others may feel differently. All this being said, even if my car blows up tomorrow...I'll probably be looking for another 996 or getting an RND engine lol because it's still the greatest bang for the buck. In my mind, it's a win if 996 can hold out until I'm ready to get the 997.2

It seemed like a good car. The paint did look like a mismatch (in the photos anyway). I guess I am a bit leery of purchasing through an auction site. You wouldn't have the opportunity to inspect before committing to purchase.
This being my first Porsche purchase, and taking into account the issues the 996 is known for, I'm trying to be extra cautious.

Thanks to Eric at Pacific Power Motorsports in Walnut Creek, CA for a thorough and honest inspection.
The search continues.

It had apparently been in a major accident (not reflected on Carfax report), replacement components on front end, bent AC lines, dings, dents, touch-ups all over the body.
Oil leak on right side of motor. Moisture in brake lines.
Based on physical condition alone, technician recommended walking away from this one. For the record, I ran.
Note to all my friends searching for a car - DO NOT TRUST A CARFAX REPORT TO BE ACCURATE
