Engine Slap Noise
Anyone want to venture a guess? The car sat for a few weeks. I drove it around town, parked for several hours, and then started driving home when I heard the noise as I started pulling away. The frequency of the slap matches the rpms. The suddenness of the onset has me thinking that it's not bore scoring or piston slap - I mean those would get gradually worse over time right?

Didn't watch video.
How's your serpentine belt?
How's your water pump?

That sounds more like a knock than a slap. Sounds like it could be anything, including bore scoring. I wouldn’t rule that out at all. And it sounds loud enough to warrant not starting the engine.

Agree Murphy. It's going to the indy tomorrow on a flat bed. If it didn't sound so bad, I'd be trying to fix myself. I just posted in the off chance someone could say it's definitely part x - then I could go about doing something without starting the motor.
Lex - Serpentine belt is less than a year old. Water pump is a little over 2 years old.

Since the car has been sitting for a few wks, I would just drive it a few days and see. Just make sure the oil level and preasure level is good. Could be just a clogged lifter. It may unclog itself after some driving.

There's a response I didn't expect. I don't know, I'm hesitant in fear of really screwing something up. If it's stuck lifter, I'd rather pay the indy for an hour and have him tell me that haha.

Indy might just do the same thing (which scares me) start it and drive it...I hope he really knows these engines!

Just from reading all of these stories, there is a few thing you can check quickly and try to rule it out. These are just my notes from reading all the knocking, ticking stories over the last 2 years.
1. Isolate noise, see if it comes from the Cat, Exhaust, head, block, water pump, oil pump... If you are afraid of starting the engine at this point which is understandable, skip this step.
2. Drop the oil filter, collapsed filter causes a similar noise. Also a chance to check for metal or other pieces which then point to bigger problem
3. Check spark plugs, loose plugs makes that clicking, knocking noise that goes with revs too. Doesn't get louder but it does go faster/slower.
4. Drop the oil sump
The above 4 seems to be something easy to do and its what I would do in that order. I am think item 2/3 are probable due to it happens very suddenly.

Since you are taking it to your Indy, this may no longer be applicable, but I would drain oil and inspect oil filter. If there are no particulates, you have ruled out most of the costly failures. If no particulates, I would run it and see if I could isolate the noise to a particular location.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep this in mind for next time. Car is on it's way to the indy. We'll see what he says. The indy has a great reputation and was a referral from my old trusted indy in LA (Callas).
