Default Question about tire size

I recently acquired a 996 C2 that has been "modified" with Victor 18 inch wheels that are:
8.5 wide in the front and 11 in the rear. The tires are 235/40 in the front and 295/30 in the rear. So basically, the previous owner kind of put turbo wheels.
Spec Turbo wheels are 8 and 11 inches wide, front and rear respectively. The Turbo tires are 225/40 and 295/30.

I plan to get new tires. The rear wheel and tire size makes sense to me, but I am not sure about the front wheels. Should I get 225/40 to match Turbo specs? or just get what I have now 235/40? My front wheels are 1/2 and inch wider (at 8.5) than the spec turbo wheels, so maybe that is why the previous owner went a little wider with 235 as opposed to 225.

What is your advise?

Simple answer. Cant recall at the moment if it was the gt2 or gt3 but one came with the 235/40......if the wheel is wider then the turbo and current tire fitment looks correct for the wheel and it dosent rub.....keep the 235

Stock tire specs for 18" wheels for an '02 C2 are 225/40-18 front and 285/30-18 rear. Check with Victor Equipment to verify if those tire sizes work with the wheels you've got; if they do, I'd just go with them.

The GT3 specs are 235/40-18 and 295/30-18, that would be my choice if the 285 is too narrow for your rear wheels.

You can easily run 245 fronts and 305 rears. 315 rears will fit too but they look a little pinched on 11" rims. I have run 225,235,245 fronts and 295,305,315 rears with no issues

This assumes that the aftermarket wheels you have are in stock narrow body offsets of ET53 front and ET63 rear.

I would run at least 235 on the front, with a 295 rear your going to have more rear end grip than front, which means truck loads of understeer, using a 235 will help balance this out.

I run a 285 rear, with a 235 front in the quest for neutral balance.

I already experience some understeer at 35, so your advice is right on point to not go any narrower. I have pretty much neutral or zero camber on the front, I should do many -1 or -2. I don't want to go with 285 rear as it feels not wide enough for an 11 rim

Talking about the new tires I want to get, I was disappointed to find out Bridgestone doesn't make the re 71r on 295-30-18. I think the best alternative is the Neova AD08 R. It is also an Extreme Performance tire. Does that make sense? I autocross and have begun to do some track. I don't want to change tires back and forth, I do moderate street driving on weekends.

AD08R is a great tyre dual purpose tyre, this is what I run, lots of dry grip, stands up well to track work and are also ok in the wet. - They also wear very slowly!

We all have different tire opinions I guess... My experience with AD08s was that all they did was made the tail of my car break loose very easily.

So what do you use now? or what do you recommend instead?

the AD08r needs to be ran at considerabele lower pressure then Porsche spec. I ride them at 34/36 psi front/rear. And 33-34psi max all around at the track when fully heated. Too high pressures will compromis stability an grip of this tire.

did you do some other upgrades of the car that made your rear too stiff. I drive stock 996 C2 with Ohlins R&T with 235/40/18 and 295/30/18 AD08r and have tons of grip and traction at the rear.

my second preference would be Bridgestone S02a. Yes they are a bit stiff but I love to have as much road feedback as possible

Your tail breaks loose very easily? In the curve and going out of it you should start flooring the throttle instead of releasing it
