Default Saga of the Exhaust Tip & Clamp

Last week I traveled the entire length (approx 110 miles) of I-88 East, in Upstate New York, probably one of the worst roads in the Northeast.

When I arrived at my destination, after I parked my 996, I did the typical look back to admire my pride and joy. And something did not look right, I walked back up to the rear of the car, and the right side factory Quad Exhaust Tip was GONE !!
I go back mentally to try to recall where I could have possibly lost it, as there were multiple construction zones, no luck.

On my return back home later that day, I had one eye on the driving in front of me and the other scanning the east bound side of the road, no luck.
Two days later, I have to go back up I-88 East, as expected I am looking for my $500+ exhaust tip. In the pouring rain, at a construction zone, I see an object sitting under the guard rail, POW !! There it was !! Luck or divine intervention??

The saga continues, I place an order from a good vendor, P.Parts. Two new OEM German Brand clamps arrive a couple days later. So it would appear to be a good time to pull off left side tip and polish up both and reinstall with new clamps.

To my Horror, I go to pull off the left side, and the clamp literary breaks off and down comes the exhaust tip.

This was a complete new exhaust, everything, even the bolts to mount the headers to the heads were new, Factory Porsche, Kline, Tubi and Dansk parts were installed.
This was done in March of 2015.

This car is stored during the winter months and normally not driven in the rain if possible.

Moral of the Story

Even when you think you check the underside of your car routinely, Look again.

Great story and a better ending. I love the look of those quad tips...

It definitely shows that the coating/plating on exhaust parts make a difference.

Wow, I don’t know how that happened in just a few years. My clamps are original (18 years) and they have ZERO corrosion. I just took off the tips last weekend, didn’t even have to use a wrench to take them off after initially loosening the bolt!

My exact thoughts

This is the factory Porsche Clamp, it looks like some type of galvanized coating

When comparing, this is German Brand OEM, looks very similar, this is what I just purchased from Pelican

I cannot remember for sure what brand I used in 2015, I am pretty sure it was Dansk.
But there are other brands that look like a zinc finish.
The odd part, is all the corrosion is just on the clamp.

OP. maybe you should spend more time on the track and less time on I-88!! Less chance of losing parts..

While I agree with the spirit of your comment...I would have to say a 996 has a much greater likelihood of “losing parts” on VIR. 😂
