2002 996TT Cooling System Issue
Been a lurker around here for quite some time. Unfortunately, I finally have a problem to ask the community about.
On my way home yesterday I had an incident with my 2002 996tt. I was cruising along at a very moderate speed when I heard a pop and a high pitched hissing. Around 15-20 seconds later the check coolant level warning flashed on the display and the temp gauge lit up. Seeing as I was on a stretch of two lane with nowhere to pull off I had to proceed for approximately 1-1.5 miles to get to my home. Of course I was watching the temp gauge like a hawk the entire time. While the needle did rise somewhat, it never even got near 3/4 way up the gauge.
When I walked around the car at home the entire rear of the car was covered in drops of coolant but I had a tough time determining exactly where the coolant had come from. I'm going to try to get under the car this evening to see if the issue is somewhere on the underside. The location of the coolant on the rear of the car suggested to me that it's likely an issue with the some hose or fitting on the upper portion of the engine, though there weren't any obvious signs of split or ruptured hoses.
I have read about the reservoir being a weak link in these cars once they get to be 10+ years old. I can't believe that the reservoir would rupture suddenly like this and make that noise though. Has anyone had a similar problem? Even an idea of where to start based on the clues would be helpful?

Coolant lines attachment points are common failure points due to adhesive used, which require the engine to be dropped and welded. Hopefully it’s the tank. Post over in 996tt forum. Several there have had this happen and will point you in right direction.

Out of curiosity, have you ever pulled the front bumper cover off to clean around the rads?
Good luck tracking the culprit and let us know what you find.

I haven't pulled the bumper and cleaned the radiators. The car has never shown a tendency to overheat during my ownership. I might have to take the time to do a little nose cleaning if I'm already getting my hands dirty.

You can either pin or weld. Well documented over on the 996TT forum. When I was buying this last car I was really close to picking up A TT Cab but got a C4S Cab after the TT's PPI revealed more issued than I cared to deal with.
