Won’t run w/o battery.

Won’t run w/o battery.
Is it normal for a 996 to shut off when you disconnect the battery?
I have an 03 C4 cabrio. I’ve had it for three weeks. It's my daily. I had the battery out week one to install an amp. Yesterday on the way home the dash went nuts and everything died. I got it home and had to remove the bumper to get to the cable and pop the trunk. My ground had come off the battery. Everything else I've ever known will run all day with the batt disconnected. Is this normal or should I be looking for alternator/regulator issues?
Thanks,
Kevin

No car should be run without a battery. It is a critical component in maintaining a consistent voltage output from the alternator. The newer the car, the more important steady power is. Situation sounds normal.

Yeah, the battery acts like a huge capacitor. Smooths out ripples in the properly high currents that run in a modern car. Without it your voltage can be all over the place, possibly damaging sensitive electronics.

Coincidentally, I was researching this today, as I had a completely dead battery that I was unable to jump. The modern cars of today (and yesteryear) rely too heavily on electronics and you can no longer safely run a car without a battery in a pinch. Check out post #4 here for tips on how to check whether it is your battery or your alternator that needs replacing: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...placement.html

I've seen guys pull a battery cable off a car while it was running ,every led light in the vehicle blew out from the elect surge .It was not good, especially since the car belonged to a popular radio D J .He was without his car for a month ,but didn't blast the shop to bad.

Really? Because I have never known any automobile to run all day with no battery connected. I have owned at least 12 cars, probably more. As others have stated, Porsche 996 needs your battery to be in the car and connected to run.

The real issue here is your first modification was to install an amp. To muffle the noise of that annoying flat six? since your ground cable was actually disconnected seems like an easy fix and you're back on the road again.
