Default bleeding issues

we're having a hard time bleeding my friend's 2000 996 tiptronic cooling system

his alternator bearing took a dive and stranded the car. I've replaced his alternator and belt, in doing so, the plastic coolant line connector disintegrated and we had to remove the coolant cover that the alternator attaches to

We started to bleed the system but we kept getting massive pockets, I would totally use an air compressor but his HOA doesn't permit the use of air tools so we have to do it the old fashion way.

This is what I'm gathering:
- get rear higher than front
- open vent valve
- poor DI water in until filled
- pull b1 fuse
- HVAC max heat/fan, defroster mode, AC on
- warm up car
- keep expansion tank topped off as it is ingesting water
- occasionally rev engine up to 4k

We're definitely getting air pockets because we can't get the water temp to stabilize and occasionally the hvac temp is dropping

any tips?
- at what point should I close the vent valve

Leave the vent valve open until you are done burping the baby.
