Default Oil caked on this part?

Hi all, I went to look at a 99 996 cab today. Nice car, 65k miles, IMS, clutch and RMS done 20k miles ago. Please forgive the ignorance, but what is this part and what does it being caked in oil/grime mean? Thank you!

Looks like right side. Could be leaked from aos breather, the cam actuator that’s above spark plug. Or maybe oil pressure senders which is a bit further up... just some possibilities. Probably have to clean it up good to find the source of the leak.

Yup, right side. Good info, thank you. I have a feeling that it’s from an old leak and was never cleaned off. The seller said that he’s never seen a drop on the ground and I believe him. The AOS was replaced at the same time as the other stuff. I guess I’ll neeed to wipe it clean, go for a drive and take a look.

99’s also still used plug tubes, which were notorious for seaping

So, worst case, any idea what I may be looking at? Would this be a deal breaker for anyone?

That alone would not be a deal breaker in my eyes.
Worst case scenario, would be a cam cover reseal which covers a lot of these potential leak points for roughly 5 hours shop labor.
Someone experienced with these cars could take the heat shield out and narrow it down for you

OK, thanks! I think a formal PPI is in order. I'll see what they come up with.

I have the same thing on my recently acquired 996. Nothing leaking and nothing dripping.

Interesting! Looks very similar. Did you has a PPI done? If so, was it mentioned?

For reference point, mine was not anywhere close to either pictures here when I bought mine. Removed heat shield and cleaned things up, mine was seeping from the actuator. It doesn’t leak leak but just seep Such tiny amount it allow dirt to stick. Replaced o ring and it’s been good since in my case. Bank 2 is harder to get
You our want to address it if it is Aos breather. You can remove air box and should see it on the right hand side. If this is leaking should take care as soon as you can.
