Seriously? I had no idea.

FYI
I just checked by comparing a 5/8”-11 tap to the thread pitch on a Porsche 996 tow hook and can confirm that the 996 does NOT have a 5/8”-11 thread.
But I did find that some newer VWs use 5/8”-11.
Porsche tow hook are larger diameter than 5/8, and use a coarser thread pitch than 11.
When i have more time, I’ll try to figure out what might be correct.

Did a bit of research. Apparently it's a knuckle thread. The one Porsche uses (since around 1986) is called DIN 405 Rd 20 x 1/8". Which means a diameter of 20mm and a pitch of 8 threads per inch. I went out and measured mine. It definitely is 20mm and 8 threads per inch, or approximately 3 threads per mm (by my measurement). However, I also saw some lengthy debate on many websites as to whether it is 3mm or 3.5mm threads. So I came up with this chart that says the knuckle thread 20 x 1/8" is TPI 8 and the pitch is 3.175mm. Not going to find this at the hardware store! http://www.ring-plug-thread-gages.co...read-data.html

Recommendation - if you don't have the specific proper tow hook, buy one (or two). Pelican has them cheap....and I even saw you can order one from Amazon. And don't screw up your threads by "trying" something else. I saw that the knuckle thread taps for cleaning up your threads are barely available anywhere and can run as high as $293!

Thanks Joe, nice work. I just got the call that the car has arrived on island and will be ready for pick up on Monday...4 days earlier than I expected. Hoping I can get in the frunk (dead battery) and find the original. Stay tuned!

808: Any other Porsche folks on the island? If so, maybe you could borrow the proper tow hook.

The couple of people (way above my pay grade) I have not met yet. I should join the local PCH and start finding my resources. Unfortunately the P dealership is on another island, but it's there! Going to pick it up Monday 9am...Wife is going to get a big surprise! Two project cars now...

Yeah I saw the P dealer had some water between you and it, but as a last resort. Heck! Put on your best shirt and khaki shorts go knock on their door. Trust me, they are no better than you are even though they may think so!! What about the guys you know but don't want to deal with, might they have a tow hook?

I just have to hope ones in the car or deal with it. No big deal...Can't wait till Monday. The things that have happened and the way they've happened almost seem to good to be true, as if I was meant to have this car. I just hope good karma comes along when I open her up. Stay tuned!

Great info DBJoe996!
Here's a picture of my tow hook "collection."
The bottom BMW tow hook is from a 2016 BMW X3.

Tex, are any of those interchangeable? My son-in-law got his Audi Q5 stuck in the snow last winter, and he had no tow hook with him (stolen). None of my hooks fit, not Mini, not Honda, not Porsche. Tow hooks should be standardized!

Probably the new VW hook would fit an Audi too.
But I’m not certain.
Standardized would be great, especially for towtruck drivers.
I had a towtruck driver return my BMW towhook that he had removed and forgotten was in his pocket.
He told me that LOTS of people don’t have their tow hook, so he carries “BMW and Mercedes tow hooks just in case.”
BMWs REALLY need a tow hook, because it’s not IF they’re going to end up being towed, but WHEN. ;-)
I have extra tow hooks because I work on cars(and buy “unfixable” cars and fix them) and wanted to be able to have one if needed.
