Mine you could easily just snap the clips and put it through the hole in the bumper! IOW it just snaps in and out!

Which backup Camera or style (CAI, kenwood/pioneer, e-bay) are you using?

I'm late to this discussion but I bought a Turbo S cab with a Kenwood head unit and a b/u camera. Very well installed, can't see any wiring. If I had to speculate, they would run the camera wiring on the passenger side all the way up to the unit.

I like the CAI camera. Excellent image, easy install and great customer service/install instructions.

Put the disconnect point under the bumper cover along with the license plate light wiring so can easily disconnect when need to remove cover.

Has anyone drilled a hole in the license plate light to mount the camera rather than in the bumper? I'd prefer not to drill a body part if possible.

I saw some replacement license plate lights that had built in cameras but reviews were not great.

I drilled a hole in the bumper behind the license plate and then ran the wire up the back of the plate. The wire is not visible unless you look from below. The camera is mounted using double-sided 3M tape.

I used this camera because of the number of mounting options: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_707VT6...-VTK601HD.html The rubber enclosure allows for pivoting the camera to refine the viewing angle.

I ended up just drilling a hole at the underside of the bumper in between the license plate lights. I will attempt to add some help to this thread, sorry if pictures are not great.

You can access the internal area of the rear bumper by removing the metal reinforcing strip at the top of the bumper cover. 4 phillips screws and use caution getting the strip off to avoid scratching.

It's very tight but by pulling the bumper cover back and using a flashlight you can see the spot where the drill bit will come through. Look down for a flat surface about 8" below. There is wiring in here so use caution drilling.

The camera I installed had the wiring go through the nut used to attach the camera. I have a hollow ratchet made by Gear Wrench that was helpful otherwise you need to use a crow foot socket on a long extension.

The wiring for the camera can be zip tied to the existing wiring underneath the body panel where the taillight is.

That video says 996.2 - but I bet that is a 2002 or earlier - as the Bose system/amp in 2003 and later is MOST (fiber) based. You cannot take low or high level outputs directly from a head unit to the Bose amp. You have to convert to MOST/fiber.

So what year is your Targa?

Headlights indicate it IS a 996.2. mr12volt has a converter interface for the MOST system. I have the PCM 2.0 on my 996 turbo 2004. I put the device in the frunk next to the CD player. I am thinking about getting an aftermarket head unit so I have carplay but I am very happy with the unit. It has a mic so I can use my phone for calls through the speaker system also.

Great quality product. I do not work for them just a happy customer

Correct I viewed another video, which stated that the 2002 was friendly wires, as 2003 and later are fiber as you stated. I have a 2004. I just want to do a new DD unit with Apple Play, with USB-charging port, Bluetooth mic,and thats it, The Apline the guy uses for the video is a deal at $199, suits my need.

So if you want to keep the Bose amp - you have to get a line level (RCA) adapter to MOST fiber to supply the input for the Bose amp. Others have done it - that will only give you 2 channels - left and right. You will need to set the fader on the (I presume CDR23 in the 2004) to center, or however you like the front/rear balanced before pulling the old head unit. Then feed the Alpine RCA outputs into the MOST converter plugged into the existing fiber.

He wants carplay - the mr12volt doesn't get him that. I have a 2003 C2 with the CDR23 - and I too have the mr12volt to get me line level input, bluetooth input and USB file input into the CDR23. I agree - it is a nice product. I have a SiriusXM unit attached to the mr12volt, so can do USB files, bluetooth phone audio and SiriusXM radio.
