Check your engine mounts :)
Just passing this on. In my 04 C4S with 36k miles everytime I would hit a seam in the road it would thump REALLY hard in the rear. I thought my suspension was going. I changed the engine mounts for another reason (Stock ones) and the hard thump is gone.
Just wanted you to know. They are in expensive and easy to replace.

I bought replacement OEM mounts but have not installed them yet. I was thinking it was a bit premature at 65k miles, but I guess time and gravity play a pretty big role.

Almost 20 year old parts, rubber and plastic will need to be change sooner then later.

Hmm, I have that thump too.
I just received my new Feal coil overs.
If i still have a thump, engine mounts will be next on the list.

My experience matches that of the OP. Also improved clutch feel and more precise shifting. Cheap “performance upgrade”.

Was an easy install under 30 min.
My car sat a lot longer before I got it (30k+ miles in 14 years). The rubber parts break down.
I have PSS9's to put on so that will even be better
Have a good night 996 gang!

Totally agree
I figured this out only this weekend watching YouTube videos…my left exhaust tip was lower than the right; several attempts at adjusting could not solve the problem, because now I know that the engine mount is shot; upon inspection underneath the car, I could see where fluid had leaked out of the mount likely some time ago; car only has 67k mile, but 17 Year’s of the engine weight bearing on the rubber, oil-filled mount. I ordered new mounts; also, shifting has been tight between gears, so I replaced the manual transmission fluid, this helped, but I’m pretty sure the new engine mounts will also help once the car is correctly supported...I had a Mercedes that failed oil filled engine mounts (automatic) and that really affected the shifting...was scary...the new install does look to be relatively easy.

I changed mine this weekend not for any particular reason other than age and mileage (80K). There was a small physical difference in how much rubber was showing. I didn't notice any difference is tailpipe sag, shifting or clunking noise (none). I guess I will call it pm. Pretty easy job though.

There is a raised feature on the embedded bolt. Make sure it lines up with the cutout notch in the chassis work. Otherwise, quite simple, and very cost effective. If you don't work on cars much, this job is a big confidence booster.
