Alternator pulley interchangeably
My ’99 996 has a damaged alternator pulley. It is an early design alternator with a conventional solid one piece pulley, non free wheel locking. Since the alternator itself is fine I just want to replace the pulley. All I see offered for sale are the free wheel lock type as installed in later cars. Is it possible to put this newer style pulley on my existing alternator? My understanding is that the design was changed in response to reports of belts being thrown off and/or high belt wear during rapid changes in engine rpm and the free wheel lock allows the alternator to spin independently of engine rpm during these events.

Should be fine as long as the shaft is the same.
You will need something like one of these to tighten the sprag clutch equipped pulley.

I have a brand new one that I installed on my alternator. The old one seized. Turned the car on and found noise in the alternator too. I bought a new alternator. Can sell you the pulley if you want it although my friend with the special wrench for the pulley moved to Cali... I have to find a way to get it off first.

A 1/2 inch drive impact gun will zip it right off..

The previous owner gave me the original alternator for my March 1998 build 996 and it had the solid aluminum pully. I installed a new Bosch alternator with the clutched pully and they appeard to be identical, except for the pully. I can't say they were identical with 100% certainty because the shaft is covered by the clutched pully.
