New 996 Owner with Questions
After much research here and looking all over I finally found and purchased my first ever Porsche, a 2002 996 4S. Picked the car up in Virginia last Friday and drove non stop to South Florida, I have to say I Love this Car.
I have been fixing little things, here and there and was just about to order the LN Spin-on filter adapter, magnetic drain plug and a .5QT deep sump kit in order to do a complete oil change on the car but have a question in reference to this. I am not sure if this engine already have some of these modifications.
Can you guys tell by the attached pictures if any of these things are already done, particularly the sum kit, I think I can tell the filter is the oem type.
Can you notice how there seems to be a plate of aluminum sandwitch between the bottom part and the block. Also this car seems to have a skid plate is this common?

Your filter is definitely stock and not the spin-on type. Your plug looks to be stock, as the magnetic drain plug is typically black in color. I can't speak to the sump itself with certainty but you do have an extra skid-plate on there which is a bonus if you live near some rough roads or steep driveways. I think it's safe to assume the sump is stock as well since everything else, beside the skid-plate, is also stock. It looks stock to me but I have no experience with the deep sump kit. My car only has the spin-on + mag plug.
Let's wait for someone with real knowledge on the sump to chime in, though.

Thank you, I thought it was all factory but wanted to verify. I will order the upgraded parts.
I really like the idea of the skid plate so I will see if the mounts can be extended.

The factory skid plate fits fine with the extended sump I have on my car.

Might want to think about a new baffle too, you will know once you pull sump plate. Fairly inexpensive and easy to change, you get the upgraded 997 part
Part #: 997-107-243-00-OEM for about $50.

Yes, there is a baffle, but has parts that potentially wear out. Your's might be good.
But based on the fact you are adding the deep sump and spin on filter I'm assuming you are worried about oil starvation.
It's possible to spend more on a much better baffle, but the 997 part is an upgrade on the one you have and is fairly cost effective.
I'm adding the 997 part to my 996.1 as the flaps on my original baffle are toast (as part of a much more extensive engine rebuild in my case).

Understood, so the 997 Baffle is a better design, thank you, did not know this.
Yes the plan is to do a few track days with this car, in addition to street driving. I am just trying to improve as I touch things, without going overboard. The spin on filter to me seems like a no brainer, I have never been fun of bypass filters. Since I want to remove the oil pan, just to check its clean and the baffle is in one piece, I figure I add the deeper sump, now I will also upgrade the baffle, it is a very reasonable priced part.
