Default Trying to identify some oil seepage

Finally was able to get the 99 996 C4 up on the lift. I see some oil seepage on the left and right side of the engine. Don't know the engine that well so not really sure when the components are. No much leaking on left side but a drop every once in a while on the right side. Ideals?

Your best bet would be to clean those ares off first (a little brake cleaner or carb/choke cleaner will clean them up nicely) and the seevwhere the fresh oil is coming from. One of the early photos looks like it could be a spark plug tube. Some of the later ones look like the chain tensioner may be leaking... check the torques on these as they’re supposed to be around 63 ft lbs... if they still leak after torquingvto proper spec, you may need new o-rings (green) or new crush washer(s).

You seepage seems to be coming from 3 common areas, the spark plug tubes, the chain tensioner crush ring for bank 1, and last but not least, the vario- cam solenoids.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I will clean it up first and look to see where the leaks originate.

The stuff on the left side by the chain tensioner could also be from the AOS above it. I've seen that a few times.

My crankcase vent tube bank 2(corrugated black plastic tube originating from above cyl 6) was cracked and leaving residue and a drop of oil after a drive. If it leaks (or drips) only after driving, check that line too. you'll likely be able to feel very wet spot at the lowest portion of the pipe. Mine was ultra brittle and cracked all over while removing it. I'm a little surprised I haven't seen more of this failure as our plastic is aging. I was able to temporarily tape it with some fancy sealing tape. Then replaced it when I did the AOS. I hope for your sake it's one of the other items listed above
