Default Erratic oil level readings

My 99 C2 has been giving some erratic oil level readings from the digital gauge. Typically, with the car stone cold, the oil level reads full. If the engine is fully warmed, it will read a mark or two low on the gauge. This morning, partially warm, it read three marks below the top.

Is this typical, and how accurate is this gauge?

Default RTFM (Have you read the instruction book?)

Check oil when the engine is hot, not cold. I check mine after at least 30 minutes of driving, particularly in cold weather. If you run the oil check off the dash computer when the engine is cold you will be waiting a very, very long time!
