I may look into coming to this. My wife and I brought our Boxster to the Smokey Mountains last year. Had a blast.

Ah gridlocked traffic on an otherwise scenic winding road..... no thanks. I will seek out the much less traveled.

the dragon really needs to be run on a moto - if possible. i've run it on several ducatis, bmws, and ktms. the back and forth is unreal on something that leans.

It depends on when you go just like any other place. If you go during the most popular times then yes it will be busy, if you go on a random tuesday, it relatively clear. On a side note, while the TotD gets the most attention, there are TONS of roads around there that are just as good with much less traffic.

If you go, don’t be affraid to head up to LIttle Switzerland and BlowingRock. Also Lake Lure is a great sidetrip. There is a stretch of road called the Diamondback. It’s a lot of fun and less travelled than the dragon.

YES to supermoto. Planning to ride my Ducati Hypermotard SP this fall

Please be careful. This road is far better for motorcycles than cars. The last time I was there on my motorcycle two riders were killed by a Honda S2000 who oversteered his butt into them. The story was a deer but having owned an S2000 I suspected the driver lost the rear on a tight corner.

Avoid the TOD on Saturdays; it is usually packed with Harleys, Honda Goldwings, etc. Hey! They have just as much rights to be there as P-cars. Sadly, too many of them are simply unaccustomed to such challenging roads. You've been warned!

I have been going to that area for years on my bike and used to own a s2000. Many already stated and 2 years ago when I was there, the traffic on the dragon on weekend is just ridiculous as well as the police patrol. However, there are many beautiful wonderful road all around the area. I am still debating if I will go to this one but if I do, I would recommend everyone to take a drive on the dragon Friday morning probably before 9am to avoid crowd or stay an extra day and try it on Monday morning before you head back home. The rest of the time, just enjoy the rest of the roads around the area, go see some waterfall and take pictures.

I used to do trips with the S2000 groups and after the first time I did a parade ride with hundreds of s2000 through the dragon, I have never done it again. It is just a stop a go traffic. I do the dinner with the group and I find some other people who loves driving and know the roads around and we drive around else where.

Might sign up for this...

However crowded the Dragon is on weekends.. you have access to other less crowded roads nearby (that are just as fun if not more fun!). NC215 and Route 28 are my personal favorites.

Thanks for the tip, just signed up!

Yep, i know how crowded it can be, particularly on the weekend and even more so when there's a large group in town -- but I just wanna go to meet pcar folks and check out the cars. Not lots of that here in Nashville, lol. I'll likely make a dragon run on my way in on Friday and then hit "the backroads" on Sat/Sun.

My local PCA Club "Alabama Region" does a Dragon Run every October. A 3 day event with driving tours of " Moonshiner 28" "Cherohala Skyway"and "Tail of the Dragon". There are many great and fun roads that are just beautifull in that area, especially in the Fall. Like others have mentioned, don't expect a "open road" on The Dragon at mid day on the weekends.

I was out there last summer with my son. Had a great time, and enjoyed going back and forth along the Dragon a few times. It was a Tuesday morning in June. That being said, the high point of my trip was later in the day driving the Cherohola. Drove 20 minutes in one direction and 20 minutes back--saw only one other car. Higher speeds than the dragon; longer, sweeping turns; fantastic scenery.
