I'd be disconnecting the battery to see if it resets the settings before cutting anything.

Doubtful. My battery pooped out and I had to change it. No battery in the car for 1 1/2 hours and I had the frustration of finding a radio code. Mirror still tilts no matter how the seat is programmed.

Does your driver's seat have the memory buttons next to it? If so have you tried pressing another configuration?

And it tilts even with the adjuster button selected for the passenger mirror? I have 2004 996 with memory seats and tilt down mirror works great - and if I center the adjustment switch no more tilt down.

I have programmed the three buttons separately every which way - in reverse, in neutral, in a forward gear, with the switch to the driver side and to the passenger side (there's no center detent). I've even tried to program it with the mirror pointing skyward, but it stubbornly reverts to curb view in reverse. If I'm ever at a dealer with one of those magic wand PIWIS things I keep reading about in these forums (fora?), maybe the mirror can be tamed. In the universe of things that could go wrong with the car, this mirror tilt is very low on my concern scale, so, in the words of Forest Gump, "That's about all I got to say about that."

This. You should be more concerned with making sure your Porsche crest caps are pointing properly towards your valve stems.
