Default Just bought my first 996!

Hey all,

My first time wandering into this section of RL. Have owned my 981 Cayman GTS since new, but decided to take the plunge on a 996 when I found one that seemed like a good deal to me. The car in question has the following details:

1999 911 Carrera
Palladio Metallic over Metropol Leather
128xxx miles
6 speed manual
Factory sport seats and LSD
Two sets of wheels (17" winters with fresh Yokohama snow rubber and 18" summers with used PS2 rubber)
Fister D exhaust + B&M short shift kit
Services performed within the last ~20k miles:
- LN Engineering IMS + fresh RMS (original IMS included with car, looks great to me)
- New clutch and resurfaced flywheel
- New tensioner guides
- New brake components at all 4 corners
- New Bilstein HD shocks at all 4 corners
- New lower control arms at all 4 corners

Have had the car for 2 days and already driven it over 150 miles for leisure. It is an absolute blast to drive. This is actually my first time driving a 996, let alone owning one. It sounds glorious, pulls hard in every gear and is hilarious to toss around (despite the snow tires currently). Cannot wait for the Chicagoland weather to improve, so I can toss the sticky tires on and really see what the car can do. This car was even featured on Bring A Trailer nearly 2 years ago (would love to talk to some of the previous owners if they are on the forums)!!!

Only negatives I seem to have noticed in 2 days of driving:
1) The brakes pulsate a tiny bit with fine modulation, feels like a warped front rotor? This car is going to see the track anyway, so new rotors/pads/fluid are in the cards for the next few weeks...but any ideas as to this behavior would be appreciated.
2) Interior is appropriate (IMO) for a near 20 yr old car, but the drivers seat does have a small tear on the shoulder bolster that bothers me a bit.

I am not much of a photographer, but here are 3 pics I grabbed on Saturday when I picked it up. All in all, I think this might be the best 13.5k I've ever spent!!!

Thanks for looking, and all comments/thoughts are welcome!

Welcome and great pictures!

My personal comments:

1) For the brakes, try to "burnish the brakes" before you decide if there are issues. I would take the car from 70-20mph about 4 to 5 times with strong braking (not ABS level). This will let you know how the brakes perform as a reference.

2) Hey, is there a sunroof? If not, the sunroof delete is a rare option. Nice!

Wow. Sounds like a great deal for $13.5K! These are awesome cars both on and off track.
Probably need new rotors if you are getting a pulsating brake pedal. As for the seat bolster - the lower bolster is a common wear location, but not the upper bolster (if they are the hardback sport seats). Maybe try a professional leather repair.

Thanks! I will try that out with the brakes and see how it feels. The car DOES have a sunroof (unfortunately, IMO).

Appreciate the input! Plan to change the drivers seat for a bucket anyway, as this car is destined for track duty!

Beauty! Do you research on here for some preventative mods for track duty (if you haven't already). Absolute blast on track. Great deal btw!

John, Not seeing any words on the blog. I've tried two different browsers and nothing. Please advise.

Might want to consider a deep sump kit if you are tracking it. Oil starvation seems to be a thing with the M96.

as woodman said, these cars dont live long on the track without some relatively minor engine work. If you try your luck, you will likely lose. The M96 motor has a hard enough time staying together as it is.

As "John McNamara" has been posting the same garbage in multiple threads, I suspect the site is probably bogus and possibly rigged to deliver drive-by exploits. Scan the crap out of your computer.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Deep sump kit, brake refresh and other preventative/durability mods are definitely on the agenda. Will continue tracking my Cayman until this car is up to snuff!

Question for the group — does anyone race a 996 Cabriolet? I’m considering getting a hard top for just a couple track days in the nicer weather as a guest, but not sure if the hard top over the cabriolet really covers it. Any experience would be helpful, if not a good thread, and you know a better one for this topic just let me know!

Congratulations of getting the 996 for $13.5 — sweet deal!

Not sure what you mean....covers what? The hard top won't do the duty of the non-cab roof in terms of stiffness. It also is not structurally durable. You'd need a rollbar regardless. Something like the race model from Autopower might fit the bill.

Yes, this is true. Each person has their own level of comfort. For me to feel good about going to the track with my 996 engine: FVD pan w/ baffles, Spin on OIl Filter, Good Oil w/ frequent changes (I use Amsoil Premium). On deck: 3rd Radiator.
