The Mileage Conundrum - What Is The Sweet Spot?
So we all know low mileage 996's aren't good because they sit around too long and cause bad things to happen.
At the same time, cars over 100K scare people away as they are deemed "high mileage" cars.
So what is the ideal mileage for a 996? What would you consider to be too low or too high or is there really such a thing?

100k. It's the sweet spot in the buying curve.

To me the sweet spot is 100K for a well cared for car. These cars have a lot of items that tend to get addressed around 100k miles. My '99 C4 had all 5 timing chains, guides, clutch, IMS bearing, plugs, tubes, water pump, alternator, shocks, and other stuff all done between 94K and 107K by the previous owner, to the tune of about $8-$10k. +/-. I picked up the car which was "fully sorted" at 107k miles for $18K and have driven it trouble free for the past 8k miles (currently at 115.5k) and (knock on wood) it should be good to go for many miles.
I'd rather get a 100k car that had all these items addressed than an 80k car that had it coming due. And people are so scared of a higher mileage M96 engines that the prices seem to really start to drop on 100k plus cars. The key is finding one that has been well cared for. There are plenty of neglected ones out there.

Sweet spot might be a bit of a misnomer, generally speaking. Spend enough time on this forum and you'll see it all, from engine explosions at 50k miles to cars that are still running after 200k.
That said, I bought mine with 62k miles, after the 60k service was done. I figure I will most likely get at least to the 100k mark before s*** really goes south, which means 5 years at least, with my useage. Of course, the engine could grenade tomorrow, so it's all kind of relative!
Find one that's been well maintained with records, that's probably the most important factor.

+1 I bought my 2000 Cab with 102k
So far I have zero oil consumption, no weird noises, runs great. I'm at 107k now
I did the IMS with LNE bearing and put a new clutch/AOS etc in it when I bought it. I also plan on oil changes every 6k or so

+1 I bought my 2002 cab with 110K
Runs perfect and strong.
I just did the IMS with the LNE bearing and put a new clutch/AOS RMS and got it back yesterday.
Indy said the car looked great.
Suspension refresh coming next.
