Porsche remanufactured short blocks
My '03 Targa with less than 55K miles has developed a rod knock which I have confirmed by removing the sump plate to find copper flakes which were also in the oil filter. A used oil analysis confirmed this theory as it showed high levels of iron, copper and lead. I am confident in my mechanical skills to remove and replace the cylinder heads and set up the valve timing correctly, but don't have the special tools or the inclination to attempt complete disassembly below the heads. I learned from reading in this forum that complete remanufactured engines for the 996 were no longer available but just recently learned that remanufactured short blocks are available from Porsche. My local Porsche dealer gave me a price of about $6500 after core turn in which I thought was quite reasonable. The negative is that the delivery time is 3 to 4 weeks as it has to come from Germany. Air delivery would add about 20% to the price. My question is if anyone has had experience with these Porsche short block engines and was the outcome positive. Thanks in advance for your input.

That seems cheap. One good thing is that they will have updated to the newest version of the IMS... so I wouldn't expect issues. This is a quote from your local dealer? and not some online scammer? right? If it all works out well, report back... I've got one in the works also. Thx

At $6500, I would have forgone the IMS solution and all the while you're in there's and just driven the car. If the engine grenaded, I'd still come out ahead vs all the PM cost. If this is a limited run, interesting arbitrage opportunity.

Generally a short block is block/crankcase with crankshaft and pistons without cylinder heads, does anyone have more concrete information as to what is included with this factory short block? With or without cyl heads $6500.00 exchange for a factory unit sounds pretty good.

Yes the factory short block is a legitimate option. Although I think it runs about the same or cheaper to have LN sleeve your original block depending on what's reusable.

Yes it's legit. It's a short block ready for heads and externals to be bolted on. I remember when we could get complete plug and play factory reman m96 engines for 6-8k, and at one time had a special where they waived the core charge, you could keep your old engine.
