Hey there,
New to the forum - Been an avid reader, but first time posting. Wish me luck!
I recently purchased my first P car. A pristine 2005 996 C4S with 27k miles on it, I'm absolutely in love with it, so far. I purchased it in Austin, TX and drove it back to Los Angeles that day with my Dad. Took us just a bit over 18 hours.
Anyway - wanted to get some feedback on any upgrades I should do to the car to make it more enjoyable. It's a daily driver for me around 20 miles round trip a day. It had a pioneer AVH-4100NEX system already installed, but other than that the car is completely stock. I don't think I want to do any suspension upgrade as I want to keep the ride as smoother as possible - these LA roads aren't the best maintained.
Looking for all tips and tricks!

Congrats, I just got my 2005 C4S this past fall just in time to put it into winter storage. Looking forward to seeing pics and what you plan on doing to it.
Since the service records that came with it left much to be desired, I'm planning on doing the IMS and RMS right away this spring. I do know it had a new clutch put in last year so I'm good there. I'll also follow my indy shops recommendations on any other needed maintenance for peace of mind.
As far as planned mods, I have ordered a Fister D exhaust from FD Motorsports as well as a set of quad exhaust tips from Maxspeed Motorsports to replace the ovals. There is a pair of OEM quad tips on the parts forum I wish were available prior to my order. Also looking to powdercoat the black wheels that came on it to gold.

+996 on the Fister D exhaust - really makes the car sound awesome.
Since you have relatively short round trip commute - I'd suggest driving the long way to work at least a few times a week to let it fully heat up. Quick start/stops without a full warmup aren't particularly good for your engine and oil.

Makes a huge difference
All depends on how deep your wallet is
I personally enjoy the aural delight served up by my Tubi headers, Fabsspeed 200 cell cats and Tubi mufflers
Other things I really liked doing;
Switching from Bridgestones to Michelin PS2s
RSS Engine mounts
Ohlins RSS and tarett Suspension Bits
Fabspeed carbon intake
Ruf Shift ****
EBC brake pads and stainless lines
Gt3rs short shift kit
......

congrats, I am a little over a year into owning my 2005 C4S, had 36k miles when I got it.
I did IMS first thing, these lower mileage cars seem to more prone to that issue....
my car had Fabspeed exaust and headers on it, installed by PO - they sound fantastic.

They (IMSBearing) all can fall victim at any mileage without warning. Some more than others...Watch the videos by JR on the PCA website for more information.

Very easy install and picks up significant power gains. Also gives you enhanced engine bay aesthetics and more induction sound

I replaced the IMS and put a new clutch plate in at the indie shop in Austin who inspected the car when purchased, also had the brakes flushed. The shop was TPWS Inc. Family owned and operated, only work on P cars.
I'm definitely interested in doing the Fister D mod. Is there a difference between Fister and Gundo?
Also want to trade out the interior lights to LED's - hard to do by yourself?
Have been looking at doing the IPD replacement - Pro's/Con's?
Would love to replace stock shifter - GT3 box or stock 997?

Before you spend too much of your hard earned cash on bolt on mods, call around to the knowledgeable shops and have a chat. I just had a really interesting conversation with a very reputable chip tuner that changed my thinking a lot. This shop tunes a lot of the most winning cars out there, and cautioned me about the gains suggested by plenum, (hot air) intakes and x pipes. In their experience, these mods are just as likely to rob power as they are to add it, or to move the power from a usable segment of the rpm curve to one that isn’t as useful. You need to draw your own conclusions, but it’s worth talking with the folks who have been around and done this for awhile.

Not many 2005 C4S around - welcome to the club!
While this isn't a performance upgrade, one of the first things I would look after (along with IMS/RMS, water pump, AOS) is the tail light assembly, which is prone to cracking or breaking where it attaches to the body. Light Savers are highly recommended if you want to avoid dropping a tail light on the freeway... (check out this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-casualty.html)

My personal opinion is a full exhaust system re-do is the best bang for the buck (performance, weight, sound).
My set-up is 1) Ported OEM exhaust manifolds (would love to do headers in the future), 2) Speedtech Catless X-pipes, 3) B&B mufflers. You can't go wrong with the reputable companies (Fabspeed, Speedtech, Milltek, Tubi, etc.). There are many threads with mostly good reviews.
I personally don't want to spend the time/$ modifying the heavy OEM mufflers to get more sound. You can pick up a set of used, lighter, louder, higher performance mufflers for not much more.

While its a only a 12 mile trip each way, its in LA traffic so about 30 mins each way depending on traffic.
Besides the water gauge hovering around 190 is there another indicator that the engine is fully warmed?
