Default retrofit a gen 2 cluster in a gen 1?

Hello,

My third post. I am looking at the gen 2 clusters for the 996 and quite like the LCD screens much better than what is in the 1999 996. I do see that the plugs are different, but I understand that the wires are all for the same things just different pin outs. is this right? Anyone out there done this? Are there other differences between the gen 1 and gen 2 clusters? Just wondering if the gen 2 cluster really is a nicer cluster like it seems in the pictures.

Some background on me:

You can find me on the Mustang Source forums under the same handle. I love tinkering and retrofitting and have done a lot in my Mustang, so I am not afraid to rip out dashboards and interiors, make wire harnesses, program and customize. I like it and it is fun. Nothing is more satisfying than to put something together, turn on the key and see that it actually works!

This is my (my wife's actually) first ever Porsche. We bought it just after Christmas. Been looking for a while and checked out a few 996s and 997s and settled on this one. Did all the reading I could out there (and yes, the IMS scares me - it will be done soon) and had the car inspected by Porsche and it passed with flying colors. The tech said he had never seen such a nice example. Bought it and 2 days later it pissed out half the coolant on the garage floor. For the life of me I could not see where it was coming from even after jacking up the car and removing the driver's rear tire. I am not prepared to drop the engine and work on this in my freezing garage, so towed it back to a very surprised technician at Porsche. Turned out to be the air/oil separator.

One thing about this cluster is that it is for a Tip and I believe yours is a Manual correct?

No, ours is a tiptronic. The picture I used was just one I took from the internet, not a cluster I bought. I need more research before I go and get a cluster. I am certainly willing to be the pioneer on this, but considering how old these cars are, I can't believe that I am the first to want to try this. I just haven't found anything in my searches.

Which, by the way, I hate the toggles.

One thing I did to my 12 Mustang was add paddle shifters from a Mercedes to my car and got them to work. I want to do this to the Porsche.

There's a thread on here that shows how to fit AMG paddles to the steering wheel of a TipS. If it get the car i'm looking at, that will be a near term project, after fixing the maintenance items.

I did see that, lol! And they are the exact same paddles I used in my Mustang. I want to get the DCTMS flat bottom steering wheel and put paddles on it.

"after fixing the maintenance items"

Lol - I am in the same boat. Hoping the maintenance issues are not too many, as my wife and I have a long list of mods we want to do.

So I don't think you want to do this unless you know what you are doing. I have a 996.1 that I had to put in a .2 cluster since I put a a 997S engine in my car. The reason I had to put a new cluster is was because the new engine had variocam which is not compatible with the .1 cluster. So the fact that you are not changing the engine I don't think you will be able to make it work. You can call Charles Dundon at Dundon motorsports to get his opinion...he would know for sure.

Those are three separate snips of the cluster pins so there is some overlap between the pictures.

Thank you!

Am I looking at the pin outs for the gen 1 or 2?

Yes...Gen 1. I don't have the cluster wiring diagram/pinouts for Gen 2.

It is a start at least. Thank you!

If the wires are all the same, just in different pin locations, then this is easy. But if there are all new or different pins or the circuits have different currents, then this ends right here, unfortunately.

I had to have my ABS pump replaced as well....I really think you should talk to someone who has done this....otherwise you will have a bunch of surprises on things you will have to change. I also had to change my HVAC control system....

I believe the Bentley book has both wiring diagrams/pinouts.
